I first went to Cornwall two years ago and stayed in Newquay. It was nice but not really my kind of thing - too many surfer dudes and teenagers! However the other half is a bit of a surfer dude so we went again this year on the provision that we could visit other areas in Cornwall . . .
I was absolutely gobsmacked - at times the when driving around the coast you cannot believe you are in England - I could have been in the mediterramean - or even Mauritius! The beaches were clear blue with long stretches of sand.
We stayed at the Quies Hotel in Newquay which has to be the most pleasant hotel I have stayed in. The owners were very accomodating - and even posted me my mobile phone which I had forgotten ( I blame being distracted by the cream teas for this)
We went through Dartmoor which was also stunning - I have lived in England all my life and was not aware that such places existed.
Newquay actually turned out an ideal place to stay as it was not too far a drive to other places of interest such as St Michaels Mount (a tiny island that you cross a causeway to get to and a lot of steps to climb but worth it for the breath taking views), Tintagel, and Padstow.
This is an ideal place for a family hoiday as there is really something that will keep everyome happy. I will definately be going back year after year.

Have you tried Mevagissey? It is a lovely fishing village near St Austell (St Austell is nothing special), quite remote and has some lovely fish restaurants.
