Advantages Fantastic place for a picnic, to take children or to job/walk, FREE!
Disadvantages Animals rome freely within enclosed areas - watch out for the dung!
Cornwall Park is about 10 minutes drive from downtown Auckland. The main gates open at 7am and shut around dusk each night. It is situated upon and around One Tree Hill, an Auckland landmark. Unfortunately today it is jokingly referred to as 'No Tree Hill' as the lone tree that once sat on top was destroyed by protestors. The hill can be seen from most places around central Auckland and all that remains on top is a tall concrete oblisque shaped structure. Possibly a memorial but I'm not sure.
The park itself is quite large and there are roads and walkways leading through the park and up to the top of the hill. There is plenty of parking and toilet facilities. There are also BBQ areas, open areas to play sports and plenty of tree coverage. There are playgrounds for children. One of the highlights is that around the hill sheep roam freely, the bottom of the hill is fenced off. This is great for children.
There is a restaurant, Cornwall Park Garden Restaurant but I have never eaten here.It is a very popular place for locals to come and exercise. It is also a very safe park as there are always lots of people around.
It is also a very popular venue for weddings and wedding photographs.Growing up in Auckland I have lots of fond memories frequenting the park as a child for family picnics and regularly visit now as an adult. I would definitely recommend a visit if you are in the area and have a spare afternoon. It is a great place to meet friends in summer and relax. Best of all it's free!
For more information on the park and directions go to: http://www.cornwallpark.co.nz/If you are keen walker I would recommend the 'Coast to Coast' walk (not to be confused with the one in the South Island.) This 16km walk takes the best part of the day and runs from Onehunga through Auckland to the Viaduct Waterfront or visa versa. Although I would recommend finishing up at the Waterfront as there are plenty of bars and restaurants to enjoy a well deserved drink! This walk encompasses Cornwell Park as well as Mt Eden.
