Following three great holidays in Corsica, staying North, East and West, I can recommend this island to anyone. The scenery is beautiful, the beaches clean and uncrowded and the Corsicans are friendly. The standard of food was high but uninfluenced by modern trends. The standard of accommodation was generally excellent but expensive and I cannot recommend the local wine. It is well worth a trip up in to the mountains, but beware the roads and native drivers - you will need nerves of steel if you venture off the main routes. We also had a few problems with the hire car - a four wheel drive would have been a better choice to deal with the rough tracks to the best beaches.
Corsica is a beautiful island of the Mediterranean coast of France. The island offers sandy beaches, rugged coasts, mountains, wild countryside, fascinating towns and villages. Package tours have hardly touched the place, but it is a favourite destination for the French, Italians and Germans and it's easy to see why.
The climate is similar to southern France; if you want cooler times try spring or autumn.
Main towns are Ajaccio (birthplace of Napoleon), Calvi (reputed birthplace of Columbus) and Bastia. Each has an international airport and ferry harbours linking to France and Italy.
Prettiest area, in my opinion, is around Calvi, itself a picturesque harbour, but wherever you go the scenery is superb. Food is excellent, part French, part Italian but clearly Corsican. Wild boar is a speciality. Restaurants are reasonably ...
Advantages: Beauty, a true holiday Disadvantages: none
Oh, Corsica. What a superb holiday. Just keep it to yourselves guys....this is such a wonderful island. situated to the west of Italy in the Med, above Sardinia.
I went towards the end of June; July gets very busy as this is when the French holiday season starts and this is a really popular holiday destination for the French, being a French island and all. June was hot, very hot, superb for a beach holiday but without the crowds. We stayed near to Cargese, actually within 2 miles of the town which was walking distance, despite the heat. Disadvantage was a rather tricky drive from the airport.
The beaches are stunning, sheltered coves with white sand, beautiful blue sea (The Med of course) fantastic swimming, and sunbathing.
Restaurants - French cuisine with the Corsican twist, Corsicans are very proud of their heritage ...
Advantages: Its Beautiful Disadvantages: Its French
I've recently returned from a seven week working holiday In Corsica and I have to say I was amazed that I had never before heard of this beautiful island. It is overflowing with white sandy stretches alongside clear green blue sea. The white cliffs of Bonifacio are the perfect frame for the open sea and when you look down and see the people who have managed to reach the all but deserted beac below you know you have to go down there. I am a bit unsure about writing this as the reason Corsica is so special is its unspoilt advantage. And TV presenters have never seen the irony in reccomending an 'unspoilt' haven to three million viewers. So go there . . . but don't tell anyone. Shhhhhh . . . ...
