I have family who live on the Costa Blanca and have visited there many times. What I love about the area is the range of different places to visit, some of which offer tourist attractions and others are very traditional and almost untouched by European holiday makers.
The Costa Blanca became a popular holiday destination in the 1980's when package holidays became very popular. Although package holidays aren't so appealing any more, the Costa Blanca sees millions of visitors each year.
Alicante is the main city on the Costa Blanca, those who visit the area would usually fly to there airport. They managed to deal with 7million new visitors last year, a target that was set for 2010 by the Spanish tourist board. Alicante itself is a nice city to visit, it has many historical features to visit. It also has a great shopping area too and its very own Mc Donald's!
Benidorm is the most popular tourist resort, those that visit here aren't really experiencing Spain, more of an artificially, purpose built host of hotels, clubs, bars and eateries. It does have a lot to offer families though and you can easily take extersions outside of the town.
A bit further down the coast takes you to Torrevejca. This is a much smaller resort, but I prefer this one to Benidorm. I have family who live 15 miles west of here, so I visit it quite regularly. It has the clubs and bars of benidorm but it also has the tradition tapas bars and late-night markets for you to visit. There are many smaller villages outside the town that can easily be visited too, so you can actually go out and experience 'real' Spain, where very few spaniards actually speak english (unlike the tourist areas).
The best place to visit in Benidorm is San Pedro. It is relatively untouched by European tourists, although it is one of the most popular holiday destinations for the spaniards themselves. It sits on the Mar Menor, the largest inland lake in Europe. Its a lovely place to visit, throughout the summer they have bars located right on the beach. It's a great place to visit if you want to experience what it's really like in Spain. You'll get to try tradition foods and drinks, all at spanish prices and not tourist prices (as spanish holiday makers don't get ripped off like us!).
All in all the Costa Blanca still has a lot going for it. The best way to enjoy your stay is to hire a car and drive all over the region, just stopping at B and B's for sleep or even take a tent to sleep in. I hope this opinion has been of some use to you.

We propose some unforgettable holidays in "El Capistrano Villages", in Nerja, the privileged balcony of the Costa del Sol. "El Capistrano Villages" is, possibly, the most beautiful and exclusive Urbanisation on the Costa del Sol.
