152 kilometres from Chittagong by road and twenty minutes by air is Cox's Bazar- beach-combers'paradise- having the world's longest (1 20 kms) stretch of beach sloping gently into the blue waters of the Bay of Bengal. A chain of green hills covered by deep reserve forests serve as picturesque background to the beach. The range of hills runs parallel to the beach for about 96 kms. At low tide, a jeep can drive on the sand for quite a distance. The wide beach is endowed with silvery-golden sand. The sea is good for bathing and swimming as it is free from sharks.
As the sun rises over the low hills, the beach at Himchari, Inani and other points are transformed into a fascinating panorama. At Inani, the beach is as wide as 182 metres at high tide and 304 metres at low tide. Himchari, only eighteen kilometres from Cox's Bazar, is yet another attractive picnic spot. The spectacle of the sun setting beyond the waves of the Bay is captivating.
Cox's Bazar and nearby Ramu have many Pagodas and Buddhist temples. The firendly Mogh tribesmen make a local variety of cigars and weave colourful handloom fabrics. Their unique customs and costumes are distinctive and attract tourists. A trip by road at dawn to Teknaf, the southernmost tip of Bangladesh is worth remembering. A visit to the nearby islands of Sonadia, Moheskhali and the coral island St. Martin is also rewarding.
Accommodation, rent-a-car, food and bar facilities are available at reasonable rates in modern rest houses, motels and restaurants especially built for the tourists by the national tourism corporation. Local sightseeing tours and excursion trips are regularly arranged.
