Curry in Krakow!

Advantages: It's curry; the mango lassi; good portions
Disadvantages: Freezing toilet; paying a premium for the location; a little shabby

Another city, another Indian restaurant. This is the self-imposed travel etiquette strictly adhered to by himself while we are traveling. On a recent trip to Krakow I couldn't really stand in the way of convention since on a previous visit in 2003, we skipped the Indian restaurant we had spotted and waited until Katowice for the curry fix instead. He made the usual noises the whole of Saturday, "We don't HAVE to go to an Indian restaurant, we SHOULD eat traditional Polish, we COULD try one of the Jewish restaurants in Kazimierz." Even when he spotted an Indian restaurant in Kazimierz he feigned disinterest when all the time I knew he was dying to see the interior, test the bhajis and sample the pickle tray. However, he managed to bear up quite well and looked relieved when I suggested that we check whether another restaurant ...

You will have a Cracking time in Krakow

Advantages: Beautiful Historic City, Cheap Food and Drink, Cellar Bars, Biggest Square in Europe, Good position in Eurpoe so there are many opportunities for travel.
Disadvantages: The Traffic

*** We stayed in two different places whilst in Krakow. We stayed in the Rainbow Apartments for the first three nights. The Rainbow Apartments are in Kazimierz which is about a 20-minute walk from the main square in Krakow. Kazimierz is the Jewish quarter of the city and is where the film Schindler's List was filmed. Therefore in this respect the Rainbow Apartments were in a nice location. The downside however was that we felt that the Apartments were a little too far from the main square of Krakow. The Rainbow Apartments were clean and modern and generally a nice place to stay. The building itself is very old and run-down, so I am sure some people might be a little worried when they first arrive at the Apartments. Personally I liked the old building as it had character. Another good thing about the Rainbow Apartments is that ...

Nowa Huta - an alternative view of Krakow

Advantages: Fascinating history, the Arka Pana, less busy than the Old Town
Disadvantages: None at all

translates as "The New Steel Mill". Of course, Nowa Huta was in reality a mammoth work of propaganda; look how happy these Polish people are living in their new apartments around tree-filled courtyards, look at the men climb on board the trams on their way to work in the steel factory, how wonderful life is under Communism! Work started in 1949; in 1952 Nowa Huta was joined by tramline with Krakow. The "Lenin Steelworks" opened in 1954. In spite of the fact that the scheme was uneconomic and really only to make a propaganda statement, steel production in Nowa Huta reached an annual 7 million tonnes by the 1970s. However, by the 1980s the growing pressures on the economy were causing production at Nowa Huta to slow dramatically. The steelworks had no easy to access to either coal, brought in from the Silesia area, nor iron ore, which was ...
