I have just returned from Craig Tara today, 27/06/07 after 2 days of a 4 day break,i thought it best i get down my experiances whilst they are still fresh in the mind.I'll start at the beginning,as my Maths teacher always told me 'its a good place to start!'.

I booked a 4 day 'Midweek Break' back in February over the Internet for my family,my wife and two children aged 2 and 3.The website is modern, with impressive photos of the rooms and entertainment available, lots of information and most of all i got a great deal of £214 Half Board for all of us with a 'Luxury Silver Chalet'.(Down from £400).Perfect for the kids i thought.I booked over the Internet there and then,so we could tell our employers of our intended adventure!

For Half-Board bookings there are 2 accomodation 'offerings',Luxury Silver and Standard Bronze. The photos of the Silver Chalet looked fine and I appreciated the lack of a lounge, but requested a chalet with a bath as we had 2 young children, and a Microwave oven to heat up some milk for their bedtimes, not an overly ambitious request for a Family Friendly Company i hope you would agree.

Four months passed, the only correspondence was an email with a PDF attachment, giving information on the park, which was very useful. With no paper confirmation,be prepared to write down and set the mobiles to remind you of your holiday! We were able to view our booking online and could find any information we were looking for on the profesional looking website of Haven Holidays.

We set off in high spirits from Perthshire on Monday morning, aiming to be there for the 2.30 check in.A lovely 2 hour drive acrss some beautiful countryside was a great start. On arriving, there was a small gathering of maybe 20 people checking in,and within 15 mins we were checked in by a very smiley lady and handed a small folder with all site information and chalet key.

We all excitedly looked at the site map, worked out where to go,parked up and dragged the luggage for 15 minutes to our 'Brig o' Doon' (more like Brig o' Doom) Chalet. The holiday mood changed from that moment. The hallway in was dark, smelt slightly of cigarettes and as we all moved around the rest of the chalet ,we found it to be in a run-down state with initials carved into window-sills,holes in the wall, hand marks on the windows, curtain rails hanging loosely, one window with a hinge missing and the beds were from the original Butlins days. This was NOT what was shown on the web-site.

My wife and i looked at each other gob-smacked.The children,to their credit, were not concerned atall and began climbing up and down the Vintage Bunk Beds.

Now ,i will list 10 items below, half of which were not in the chalet, see how many you get right!

1.Beds
2.A Chair
3.Television
4.A Bath
5.Soap
6.Hand-Towel
7.Bed-Linen
8.A Bible
9.A Microwave
10.Toilet Roll

Surely all of them,i hear you cry.

No Bath,No Soap,No Hand Towel,No Microwave and no damn Chairs!

We were not happy, but with the rest of the afternoon in front of us,went over to a fairly nice play park before going up to the reception to ask if it were possible to get a microwave for our kids (they would see what they can do) and whether they had made a mistake with our chalet (it was indeed a Luxury Silver Chalet).I looked around for someone to tell me i was on tele, unfortunately i wasn't.We asked if we could upgrade. "We're completely full" he said."Oh don't be ridiculous" i laughingly replied. We were told to return in the morning to see if anything had changed.

We made our way, hesitantly, to 'Turnberry Gardens',the site 'Restaurant' for some much needed fuel. The site that greeted us was like something out of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest'.I will not dwell, but needless to say,the food was mass produced junk and trying to get 3 plates of food that we wanted with accompanying utencils and condiments, along with a free, clean table was a feat in itself.

Shaking our heads in disbelief,we returned to our Prison Cell,Sorry,Chalet and got our DVD Player out to wile away the remaining couple of hours of this amazing day.

We all slept fairly well, and like we do most mornings,we started with a positive attitude to make it a good day.We made it to Breakfast, which was acceptable, then decided to try out the swimming pool.No problem getting in,it was Free too! The Family Changing Rooms were far too small,it was like being in a car park, waiting for someone to open the door to a cubicle, there would be people running to get in. The pool itself was actually quite impressive, except it was freezing cold.We managed half hour of fun and went back to the changing rooms. Why have the entrance, the token machine, the baby changing facilities and the lockers all in the same vicinity? It was mayhem.I started to get the 'If you can't beat them join them' feeling and managed to barge my way past a a couple to gain access to the Holy Grail of a Free Cubicle.

We wandered down to the reception with high hopes of an upgrade and maybe even a Microwave.Neither was offered,we weren't really that surprised on the current form.

We had to get off the site, this was starting to get to us.We made a short 15 Minute drive into the pleasant town of Ayr.We managed to find a Morrisons and 'Mum' treated us all to a fantastic picnic, that we served up inside the car in front of the lovely sandy beach at Ayr Sea Front.

As we drove back,i couldn't help myself, and failed to indicate and negotiate a right turn into Craig Tara, and carried on South.Around 10 minutes drive later we caught sit of a fantastic Castle ruin on the sea edge, and turned the next right to get down to it.Dunure Castle ruins were a very interesting relic and the kids were enjoying the environment next to the sea and we walked the 5 minutes down to a beautiful little harbour, lots of boats and a very inviting Inn on the Harbour Side,so inviting we had a quick drink.By far the nicest part of our holiday.

We realised we would have to return to 'there' at some point. We made the turn into 'that place' this time and had a quick wash and set off for the Fun Fair so the kids could spend the £30 given to them from their Nonna,Gwanny and Fanty. There were 4 rides,2 Bouncy Castles and a Crazy Golf, which had clearly seen better days. The kids enjoyed a couple of rides in particular and used the bouncy castle to good effect, although the 5 minute limit made me laugh, there was not exactly a queue.£10 worth of tokens got them 4 rides, they enjoyed them and that was the main thing. We had a wander around the Entertainment Complex, had a beer for £2.75,lost a fiver on the gambits and played an atrocious game of pool.It was OK,but i really did not think i was on holiday.

We then gathered round and got our plan together for the evening meal,we agreed to hold our own and order what we wanted with the minimum of fuss.Within 35 seconds of entering, everything had gone to pot and ended up with some food bunged on some plates in no particular order,3 spoons,4 knives,a couple of wonky forks,2 mayonnaise and 7 Picallili Sachets.

To cut a long story short,my Wife took our Daughter into the toilets and returned with a horrifying tale of uncleanliness. We decided at that moment to cut our losses and return home the next morning.

Me and my wife felt so guilty for the kids, but they still smiled at us and gave us kisses, they must of felt sorry for us.

Wednesday morning was a rush to get everything into the car and get away.My wife gave in the key and gave the staff some choiced words, she really could not be bothered to 'see anybody' as nobody seemed to care.

Kite Flying was much fun back at Ayr beach before we drove the 2 hours home to our humble abode, where we had a warm bath followed by Fillet Steak,Pasta,Potatoes,Brocolli and a fine bottle of Wine. The Bairns could not get the Brocolli and Pasta down quick enough.

Overall,we felt as though we had been away for 2 weeks, the turmoil we endured at Craig Tara in just 48 hours was just unbelievable.

I would not recommend Half Board staying at a Luxury Silver Chalet at Craig Tara.

I would however, recommend the area of Ayr itself, pleasant people and some fine scenery.
