Advantages: Location; Room Sizes; Comfort of Beds Disadvantages: Needs Updating; Noisy Bar
With our annual cricket trip organised we (me and two friends) were off to Headingley and given it was the Ashes, we were actually a bit stuck for accommodation. And so to the rescue came Ilkley. One of us had spent some time there before, and with a ringing endorsement our hotel search shifted out into Yorkshire. Where we found the CrescentHotel.
Located just 5 minutes walk from the train station in Ilkley this is a perfect location for getting about. The train to Leeds takes just 30 minutes, with the regular bus service being around 15-20 minutes longer. Ilkley itself is lovely, and there are a number of pubs and restaurants within a few minutes stroll from the Crescent.
Arrival was slightly confusing, however. The entrance from the main street takes you into a large bar, and it's not immediately obvious where the reception is ...
Advantages: Excellent Central Location, Superb Meal Disadvantages: Limited private parking
We used this hotel a week ago for a friend's Hen Day. She booked a Spa package through a third party provider, and it was this hotel that they sent us to. As the Renaissance is a small chain owned by Marriott Hotels, we were looking forward to a good night away.

We got lost with the directions as we found that they missed out a couple of junctions - and we were proved not to be the problem as the other group also got lost on their way to the hotel.
Upon arrival, we headed for the hotel car park, only to be put off by a notice on the car park sign instructing us that we should report to reception first. We turned ...
Advantages: Good quality shows, affordable prices Disadvantages: Theatre only half-full for most performances
Ask most Brummies if they know the way to the Crescent Theatre and you'd receive a lot of blank expressions and head-scratching. This is a very small, but perfectly formed, virtually unknown theatre situated in Sheepcote Street - very close to the fashionable Brindley Place area.
The theatre has a lot of history in the city spanning back to the turn of the last century, but after fire damage was closed for many years. It was reopened a couple of years ago and is a very modern and well designed building to spend a pleasant evening at the theatre. The modern, well-stocked and very resonably priced bar is a definite plus and is even a nice place to spend an evening with friends when there is no production.
However, a superb building is nothing if the quality of the productions are lacking. Fortunately, the majority of the shows are ...
