I have never been abroad before, I have never flown before so the last 2 weeks have been a bit of a shock for me!

We booked our holiday to Crete way, way back in May 2002, and the 18 months wait was a torture!

We stayed at the Sunlight Hotel which is midway between Aghios Nicholas and Elounda on the North East Coast of the Island. There was fairly regular bus service 1 bus an hour going each way between the 2 towns, the main problem was they stopped running at 9pm. It cost 1 Euro each for the bus or 7 Euros for a taxi from either town.

Aghios is very tourist orientated, lots of souvenier shops, boat excursions and waterside restaurants, but it is still a very pretty town. Most of the town is centered around the harbour where there are several companies offering trips to Spinalonga, a small island that used to be a leper colony. Prices for a trip there ranged from 10 Euro per person to 23 Euros. The main difference you pay for is the boat you travel on, the smaller boats charge less but you get almost the same time at Spinalonga which is another 2-3 Euros for an hour visit, the larger tour boats do have guide so if you want to know all the history of the place it is probably worth paying the extra or buy a book before you go.
Another attration in the town is the bottomless lake. It isn't actually bottomless it is around 64M deep but for a long time was thought to be bottomless and the name has stayed with it.
There are many cafes and restaurants to choose from, prices don't vary too much, we paid around 6Euro for a main course. In most places you will pay around 2 euro for a coffee.
Wednesday in Aghios is market day, the cobbled streets are lined with local produce and replica tee shirts! I have never seen cabbages and cauliflowers as big in my life as the ones that were being sold there.

Elounda was the other town closest to us and although not as big as Aghios we spent a lot more time there. The people are very friendly, it isn't as touristy as Aghios, there are nice beaches which are small and the water is clear. Sunloungers and umbrellas could be hired for 2 euros each a day. There were changing rooms on the larger beaches and toilets nearby were clean.
Elounda also has boat trips to Spinalonga costing around 8 euro per person. The trip only takes about 15 minutes from Elounda so it is better if you aren't a keen sailor.
Again there are lots of cafes and restaurants with prices about the same as Aghios, around 6 euros for a main course and 2 euros for a coffee. I would recommend anyone wanting to try a full English breakfast try the Ferryman Bar. It is run by a couple from Nottingham and we visited it several times during our stay. We were made very welcome there.

Both towns had a good nightlife, not clubs as we know them although Aghios does have nightclub as I think of a nightclub on the harbour called Lipstick, mostly though it is little bars and cafe bars.

We hired a car for a couple of days as otherwise the only way to see anything beyond Elounda and Aghios was taxi, or coach trips which worked out very expensive. It cost us 70 euros to hire a Hyundi Accent for 2 and a half days, this inclued full insurance and the car was half full with fuel when we picked it up. We filled it up and it cost us 20 euros for the half tank.
Getting used to the roads was a problem, they are often very narrow and one side is inches from a steep drop down a mountain, most roads are only just wide enough for 2 cars to pass and some aren't really wide enough for one car (or thats how it seemed!)
We drove to Vai beach which was 100km from Aghios, it is the only tropical beach on the island and is lined with palm trees. When we got there we didn't stay as we were very nervous about driving and it was very windy, so we had the choice of staying there all day in the wind or driving back before the traffic started building up. We chose to drive back. Our journey there had all been at night as my husband drives on a night in his job so we found it easier.
As it got light the traffic started to build up so we stopped of at town called Sitia.
Sitia is where a lot of the Creten wines are made. The difference between Sitia and Aghios and Elounda was amazing, it isn't geared up for tourists at all, there were very few tourist shops, and the public toilets were the worst i have ever seen in my life. I was at the stage those where I was desparate and HAD to go. We asked a man who was cleaning along the harbour where they were and he pointed to either end of the harbour, so we figured that there were 2 lots and headed for the nearest end, when we got there we found holes in the ground with foot plates either side to stand on. Had I been able to hold on any longer i would have, but there was no way I could so I did the bare necessity and headed for the other end of the harbour hoping they would be a bit more upto date. They were! They were actually proper toilets but, they were disgusting, I don't think they had been cleaned from the day they were installed, so we headed of in search of a cafe with a loo. We found one after several minutes of searching and what a relief that was!

We decided Sitia wasn't a place we wanted to hang around in too long so headed back to the car, we then discovered that the streets were like London in rush hour, there was no way we were going anywhere. So we spent the next few hours looking around the shops and walking round the harbour. We were so thankful for Siest time as the entire place seemed to shut down and we were able to make our escape. We had hoped that the town would be one we could stay in until nightfall so we could drive back in the dark again, but risking our lives on the roads in a small amount of traffic was preferable to spending another minute there.

We made it back in one piece and we are really glad now we drove through the day because other wise we would have missed some fantastic scenery from the mountainsides overlooking the sea.

We dropped the car off 12 hours before we had to because the stress of driving on the roads was too much!

If you decide to go to Crete I think the latest you should go is the first 2 weeks of October because after that the smaller towns seem to close completely, we spoke to a local bar owner in Elounda who told us that there are only about 10 hotels open in the town through the winter months and only 3 bars and 4-5 restaurants.

The hotel we stayed in was ok, it was very basic, there was a pool and a pool bar but it closed at 6pm and stopped serving snacks at 4.30pm so unless you travelled to the towns there was no where to eat. Breakfast consisted of 2 slices of bread a slice of maderia cake, coffee and juice, hench the need to go in search of an English Breakfast. We had a beautiful view over the gulf of Mirabello. The rooms were cleaned every day except Sunday and linen was changed twice a week.

We did have a problem with ants, there were thousands of them and we went through 2 cans of Raid insect killer.

The island is very hilly and unless you go by bus, taxi or hire a car you are limited especially if you stay in an out of the way hotel as ours was!

We paid £254 each for B & B through Kosmar.
