Crete is a beautiful island full of lot of sandy beaches, lovely people and nice food. I would recommend staying in crete itself for 2 weeks as you wouldn't get to do everything that you needed in one week.
The best way to get around the island is by car, warning do not buy/rent a motorbike there are sooo many accidents in the island of crete involving motorbikes. This is why the price of renting a motorbike is soo cheap. I recommend you rent a car for around $50 euro a week.
I went in the middle of May Time the tempreture was around 29'C which was perfect and there wasnt too many people around. Avoid going in August as it will be swamped with children.
The flight time was around 2 hours and 50 minutes and it was a comfortable flight. Im sure a quick sleep on the flight would kill time
