I went to Crete for the first two weeks in June, a perfect time as its hot but not too busy.
We got a flight to athens and turned up at the port and jumped on a Catamaran to Crete. It was quick and fairly cheap.
We spent the first two nights in Hania, again we just turned up and got a room when we arrived. I should state here that we had the Lonely Planet Guide to Crete which is excellent!
We stayed in a lovely little hostel and Hania is a lovely venetian town. In particular there is a small shed type bar that has live Crete music every night, it looks terrible from the outside (and the inside actually!) but the musicians are fantastic and the dancing great fun too. Ask at the front side restaurants for directions.
From Hania we went to Georgiopoulis which is very touristy and I wouldn't necessarily recommend but a friend of mine from Athens told us to go and to go to the lake nearby - it was worth it! A beautiful quiet lake where you can hire pedaloes and lie on the beach etc. Very relaxing. Its best to hire a scooter to get there.
We then took a bus to Frangocastello and stayed in a cottage right on the beach, it's a very isolated town with nothing much to do in the evening but it has a beautiful beach and is great for getting away from it all.
Then we took a boat to the Island of Gavdos. This place is fabulous - but be warned there are no shops, no banks, no nothing! Make sure you take everything you need with you - including a torch. It was also tricky here being vegetarian as the taverna's basically had fish or goat! We had a really great time though. Hire a scooter and drive round the island, there's no other traffic to worry about at all and the people are very friendly.
Then we went to Paleohora, similiar to Hania only smaller. It is also a lovely little town and well worth the visit.
Finally we went to Milia. This is my absolute must do recommendation. Its a self-sufficient village and although more expensive for budget travellers well worth splashing out:

Check out the pics, it really is that beautiful! This is the place I am definitely going back to and the place I wanted to stay forever!
