The first time I went to Crete I loved it, its different from other placed in the med in so far as it has not changed much in the last 10 -20 years, there are plenty of good village life experiences. You can buy the cheapest hol package around, get to your first night package accom over with, then travel the island via B & B s,(very cheap) its just great. Spilli is one of my favourite inland towns, the mountain water is delish, a little cafeteria near the lion head water fonts is idyllic.The people are very friendly on this island (the largest in the Greek assortment) a must to visit. Ive been 5 times and still not explored all the island, beware of the driver road sense be on your guard, but do not let this put you off. PS do the Samaria gorge walk, its an experiance you will behold.
