Crofters Restaurant is along the high street in Sheringham, Norfolk. It is just a small place that has 32 covers, but has when open 2 sittings.
This is not your local sea side restaurant, with the fish and chips although they do have it on the menu. This is a little gem that we found some years ago and visit as often as we can. Our children love it as much as we do and now take their partners there.
From the outside looking in it does look dark inside but it has little booth tables with a curtain between so you cannot see who is in the next booth, only the customers opposite. I would advise you to phone and book due to the size, especially if you intend to visit on a Friday or Saturday evening or even on a Sunday lunch.
The menu is very varied and caters for all tastes.
One of my favourites is the Deep Fried Brie, they also have Asparagus Beidelburg which is fresh asparagus wrapped in smoked bacon fried until crisp with a cheese and tarragon cream sauce. Large local mushrooms grilled and topped with cheese and smoked bacon and put under the grill. Home made soups, Whitebait, Fishcake Hamburg Art, which is smoked haddock with mild mustard, lightly fried until crisp placed on a hot cucumber and cheese sauce.
The choice is again very varied and the price of the starters range from £2-60 for the soup £4-70 Schnecken Ragout, Austrain Snails cooked in herbs garlic onions and a red wine sauce served with garlic bread.
They have an array of fish dishes which range in price from £11-95 for salmon fillet with a cheese sauce with smoked trout, prawns and finished under the grill to Crofters Mediterranean Paella for two at £35.
Meals from the stove, includes, Normandy Crispy Duck, served with apple and on a bed of rice, with a rich Madeira sauce, costing £10-95. You can also choose Carpet bag steak princess for £11-60, which is a large sirloin steak, with stilton asparagus and onion filling, chargrilled to your liking with a port wine cream sauce or Poachers Pot for £9-65 which is strips of game sautéed with mushrooms, and onions and finished with a rich red wine sauce.
Crofters has a very good vegetarian menu, mushroom stroganoff is what it says on the menu, mushrooms, onions, peppers and chick peas sautéed finished with a paprika wine and dream sauce, £10-55. Herby nut crunch for £10-80, parcels of chestnut, fresh herbs, potato and cheese, fried crispy in a homemade batter served on a bed of tomato and basil sauce.
The puddings are to die for, and our favourite is Snobinettes at £3-95, this is 6 small chocolate cups filled with a liqueur of your choice and topped with fresh cream and they are just the right size to fit into your mouth and yum, yum, yum. Or you could choose the home made German cheesecake or any of the other 15 desserts on the menu.
I do hope that I have wetted you appetite for this restaurant.
I would also add that they do a lunch time menu and it is smaller and less choice but they have a special of the day every day and we have never been disappointed with our meal there.
The quaintness of the Crofters is great and the cleanliness of the kitchen and politeness of the staff is fantastic. To visit the toilet you have to walk through the kitchen so all the cooking and food prep is on show at all times.
Advantages: Average food prices Disadvantages: Lack of service
...Mother who are local visited Crofters Restaurant in March 09 and had a bad dinning experience.
The food was swamped with sauce, the Waitress did not know what was on the menu and the atmosphere was terrible.
We sat in bench type seats with high backs with curtains so you could not see any of the restaurant,we could be anywhere like the chip shop across the road !
My Mother said it reminded her of a Pie & Mash shop that you would see in London many ... ...a field day with this one !
We were not greeted by any one when we arrived and not a good bye when we left !
In this current climate i don't know how long a business like this will stay in business.
The food is quite good value but the Wines over priced for an average Cafe type restaurant.
I would suggest anyone who wants good and service should visit "Number Ten" Restaurant ...
