The Crowne Plaza hotel in Liverpool is a good hotel to stay in if you want a city break at a quality hotel. The best thing about it is the location. ST. NICHOLAS PLACE, PIER HEAD LIVERPOOL, L3 1QW
The hotel is (almost) on the waterfront close to the Pier Head and a short walk to the Albert Dock. I say almost on the waterfront because there is a new office building between the hotel and the river so although "room with a river view" is a truism, you need to look between the buildings! Remember the Fawlty Towers sketch Guest -" I asked for a room with a sea view" Basil -"there it is over there between the land and the sky"!
Actually the river is only 50 yards away so don't be put off. The Isle of Man Steam Packet ship docks just near to the hotel and gracefully slips away at about 12.40 for Douglas.
The hotel is next
door to the three most impressive buildings on the Liverpool waterfront known as "the three graces". The Royal Liver building, built in 1911 and allegedly Britain's first skyscraper. It houses Britain's biggest Electric clock built to be precise so mariners could be assured of its accuracy. The Cunard Building where transatlantic passengers booked their voyages and the Port of Liverpool Building (formerly known as the Dock Office built in 1907. A short walk past these three is the Albert Dock which is now a retail and leisure complex with some good restaurants, the Tate Modern Museum and the Maritime museum. Any way I don't want to be getting into trouble with review guides this is supposed to be about the hotel. (But all the above are within 400 metres of the hotel's front door so I think this is relevant). It is also only 10 minutes walk to Matthew Street (Cavern Club and all that Beatles stuff).
The car park is larger than it first appears and I noticed there were always spaces around the side of the hotel during my stay. Residents are charged £5 per 24 hours or part thereof. Pay at the reception on departing to get an exit ticket. For people arriving by air to Liverpool John Lennon airport, I guess a taxi would cost about £15 to £20 and should take twenty minutes or so. If you arrive in Liverpool by train you will probably disembark at Lime Street. It is about a mile to the hotel and a cab should be less than a fiver (my guess is probably £3.50 ish)
I stayed for two nights (Thursday and Friday) and used my reward points from priority club membership so I didn't pay for the room. I understand a standard room rate for a double is £99 or £113 if you want breakfast included. One of the reasons to choose this hotel for a Liverpool break is the leisure club. After a hard days shopping, museum--ing or just generally walking around town the sauna and Jacuzzi were perfect. The swimming pool is big enough to swim properly in and they restrict kids to certain hours although we didn't find this a problem. The gym is well stocked with the usual machines weights and treadmill/cycle rowers etc. I only saw one member of staff doing a personal trainer session with a club member so it seems you are left to do what you want (which I prefer anyway). Oh by the way the best way to book is through the website ichhotels.com and join the priority club to get special offers etc. Room is the standard Crowne Plaza type and includes :- · Bathrobe · Bathtub · Business Centre · Cable / Satellite TV · Coffee Maker · Colour TV · Double Glazed Windows · Hairdryer · In Room Movies - Pay Per View · In Room Safe · Individually Controlled Air Conditioning · Iron / Ironing Board · Mini Bar · Phone with Voice Mail · Private Bathroom · Separate Hanging Closet · Tea Maker · Trouser Press There is an ice machine near the lifts and an ice bucket in the room. I can't be the only person who buys my wine at the supermarket and chills it in the ice bucket in the room! Crazy hotel bar prices are the kind of thing to make me do this! At the Liverpool Crown Plaza a Pint of Guinness is £3.00- the usual price for this in a pub would be £2.50 up north (ie not in London). However I did buy a bottle of champagne from the bar and £30.00 was the cheapest of the selection available rising up to £100. ( I'll bet you can't guess which one I bought?) All the staff I encountered were very friendly and refreshingly for city centre hotels in UK most of them were British, well the customer facing ones were anyway. So if you fancy a trip to the European Capital of Culture 2008 then in my view you could do a lot worse than stay at the Crown Plaza.
It's a long lone time since I stayed in Liverpool. I do remember two overnight trips when I stayed in the newly completed Atlantic Tower which overlooked the docks as well.
