M y wife and i were visiting Leeds (family reasons) over the Easter weekend and it was a choice between the Marriott and the Crowne Plaza. We chose the Crowne Plaze because last time we stayed at the Marriott it was very busy and we didn't fancy a hectic weekend.
We got a good deal for the 3 night stay - £159 for a room, bed and breakfast with dinner on the first night for the first two nights, and £69.50 b&b for the third night. Just about the same price as the Marriott but with dinner thrown in.
The hotel is not much to look at from the outside and is now 13 years old and showing its age just a little. The reception, lobby and central stairway to a first floor lounge, however, are quite welcoming and spectacular - makes you feel that the hotel is a bit special.
Our room which was just a standard on the fourth floor was good, roomy with a king size bed - not much to look at out of the windows just the Yorkshire Post building and passing motorway.
The staff at the hotel were good, welcoming and clearly well trained - they dealt with my wifes dietary requirements with no problem at all.
We ate in the restaurant on the first night and the meal was excellent, good choice, well cooked and presented, properly served and tasted delicious. My only disappointment was the price of the wine - £32.00 for a bottle of Sancerre - it was the most expensive on the list but as the meal was in the price of the room - you have to take advantage!!
Breakfast was good too - plenty of choice both cooked and continental.
We had hoped for a reasonably quite weekend but the place was very popular with families over the Easter break - one of the staff told us there were 35 families booked in on one of the nights, and they were making full use of the facilities - the indoor swimming pool was busy all the time we were there and my wife had to resort to a 7.00am swim to beat the crowds!
The hotel is also a little way out of the centre of Leeds - 10 minute walk - but nevertheless we felt it was a decent 4* hotel, well managed and run and reasonable value for money, certainly worth considering the next time we are in Leeds.
