Join the Crowds in Croyde

Advantages: Old-world charm; the beach; surf; climbing; views
Disadvantages: Very crowded in the summer; expensive food and drink

Croyde lies on the North Devon coast, a few miles from Barnstaple to the South East and Ilfracombe to the North East. Most well known for its beach and stunning bay, it's one of those sleepy little time-warp villages that get overrun in the summer by hoards of visitors. Guilty as charged, I have been visiting regularly over the last twenty years.

The beach at Croyde sits in its own glorious, sweeping bay about half a mile wide. It is sandy, with proper dunes, and shallow, sloping very gently into the sea; this makes it relatively safe for children, and is enhanced by the presence of lifeguards on the beach. It's also very clean and has won the following awards:

GOLD David Bellamy Award
ENCAMS Seaside Award
BLUE FLAG CAMPAIGN Award

The Beauty Of Croyde

Advantages: Beach, Bay, Village Atmosphere
Disadvantages: Tourists (but we all are)

...adventures began. Driving into Croyde we travelled from Honiton in Devon and headed for Barnstable. The trip from Barnstable to the picturesque village of Croyde brought about stunning sights and views as we passed smaller villages all situated along the coastline. On entering Croyde it was apparent that this small village was a very popular place. With excellent surfing facilities I was expecting the village to be heavily populated with tourists ...
...based in the heart of Croyde is famous for its live music and community spirit. We sat in the sunshine; though the pub offers plenty of indoor seating should you wish to sit indoors. In addition to The Thatch, there is also The Manor; both pubs do excellent food, though if I had to choose one I would definitely recommend The Manor for a great meal. Both pubs were bustling despite being end of season. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating ...

A little piece of heaven

Advantages: Beautiful, stunning views.
Disadvantages: Gets very busy

Croyde is a place I have been visiting for the whole of my life. As a child myself and my family have always gone there for holidays. As a child before we ventured abroad sometimes we used to visit twice a year once for a week at Easter and then for 2 weeks during our summer holidays. Even as the years have passed I have returned there every now and then just to see if it is still the same and to my relief it is, a lot busier but pretty much remains ...
...about 2 1/2 hours. Croyde is now one of the best destinations in north Devon for surfing and during the summer months the beach is very busy with surfers but with a great age variety, even small children can be seen in the little wet suits and body boards. ~Campsites~ There are about 10 campsites around croyde some are only open for a few months of the year and are aimed for the surfers others are very family orientated the main one is called ...

It's Ruda Marvelous!

Advantages: Right on the beach
Disadvantages: Seaguls!

I recently stayed at the Ruda Holiday Park, Croyde Bay in Devon for a short break, camping, reading and drinking cider. The choice sites to stay in in Croyde isn't massive and I think that it is fair to say that Ruda has the monopoly in the area, with such a large site right on the 'Blue Flag' golden beach. Prices were reasonable at £13 per pitch per night in July (pitches are big enough to fit 3 or 4 two man tents on, and have ample space for vehicle), £16 per Pitch for an electricity hook up. With this you get passes into the bar, for evening entertainment and use of the facilites, Hot showers and clean toilets being the most important. (showers and toilets are free) The park also has a shop open 7am-8pm , cafe, Amusement Arcade and bar area, not to mention the park's indoor Cascades pool complex with 230ft flume and rapids ...

Review of Ruda Holiday Park

Croyde Bay,wakes up in the summer

Advantages: Tons of stuff to do, never ever boring
Disadvantages: Its not Newquay

If anyone is thinking of venturing away from home over summer but don't fancy going abroad because of the cost and risk, try visiting Croyde Bay in North Devon. I personally have been visiting this part of the world for 17 years now and I'm 18 this summer. Croyde Bay is ideal for the 18-30 range its a bit quieter than Newquay and a bit of a lack of a nightlife but when the weather is good things pick up. It has some of the best beaches in the country and they really are good. When we go we usually stay in a caravan park called "Ruda holiday park", it has all the trimmings and is pretty hard to faulter. Theres an amusement arcade for the younger ones, a sort of SPAR type shop, a big swimming pool with slides and stuff, a big club which includes things for all ages from childrens entertainment to a makeshift nightclub which goes on into ...

Review of Devon (England)

Let's hit the beach.

Advantages: Location, great accommodation, facilities.
Disadvantages: Weather, local transport.

Let's see, I think I've stayed at Ruda Holiday Park 1, 2, 3?7 times! I first visited when I was only 12 years old. We returned a year later and, well, just got in the habit of going back year after year. I think the main reason for our repeated visits is the convenience of everything. Ruda Holiday Park is in the beachside village of Croyde Bay, North Devon - close to Woolacombe. From the site it is only about a 2 minute walk to Croyde Bay beach, so no expensive National Trust car parks. On site you have everything you need: a supermarket, take-away, restaurant, indoor cascades fun pool, gift shop, tennis courts, putting green, arcade, bar, laundrette, children's activities club, evening entertainment (bingo is a nightly favourite to start things off). Accommodation includes static caravans, lodges, beachside apartments ...
