Comendador

Advantages: Funky, small, beautiful and friendly
Disadvantages: Bit of a noisy street and room quality looked variable

This is a great little place to stay, right in the middle of the Old Town in Havana. It's really more of a glorified guesthouse than a hotel. It's built around a couple of courtyards over two or three floors and it's part of the same building as the hotel next door. The central courtyard is beautiful, with trailing plants and pots all over the place. Our room was absolutely huge, with a balcony running around two sides of the outside of the building, ...
...in the early morning when deliveries were being made. We only stayed for three nights, but it would be worth trying to get a quieter room, off the main street, if you were going to stay any longer. The location is great in terms of seeing all of the sites in the Old Town, however the place wasn't exactly jumping when we were there in May. I suspect the night life doesn't really centre on the Old Town. The staff were pleasant and helpful and the ...

Iberostar Daiquiri

Advantages: Very close to a white coral sandy beach
Disadvantages: Not for people that want to explore. Unless you are prepared to do a bit of travelling.

Now what can I say about this hotel. This hotel is situated on the beautiful islands of the cayos which is a beutiful group of islands of the north east coast of Cuba. My impression of these islands was heaven on Earth and it's all inclusive. What more could you ask for. This hotel is situated on the island of Cayo Guillermo, which is about a 30 min transfer from the airport situated on the island of Cayo Coco. All the islands are joined by cause ...
...Coco to the mainland of Cuba. If you do plan any trips to mainland Cuba then be prepared to transfer to your distination by plane. The rooms are large and spacious and are situated in chalets. That are dotted all over the hotel ground and tropical gardens. The rooms consist of 2 large double beds, satelite television and come with air condition. The rooms also include a sfety box and a fridge that is topped up with water and soft drinks on a daily ...

Colonial comfort but no air con

Advantages: Good location, beautiful building. lovely parrots
Disadvantages: Poor customer service

Hotel Beltran de Santa Cruz is in the heart of old Havana and in a great position for the area's major attractions, as well as paladares, cafés, and bars. The hotel is part of a Cuban chain (Habaganuex), but don't let that put you off. Recently refurbished, it was formerly a colonial merchant's house. You enter by a huge wooden door and are in the reception area, beyond which is the beautiful courtyard. In the corner is a bar where you can also opt ...
...a bit of crusty bread. There are ten rooms and one junior suite over two floors, and all overlook the courtyard. Each room has shuttered doors that can be opened to let in light - ours had no other window and really needed the shutters opens although this limits your privacy. This means you don't get an outside view - just one of the courtyard (or "patio" as its known in Spanish). There were two large beds, a bathroom with a bath, and a lovely wash ...

Hotel Palma Real, varadero, Cuba

Advantages: All round good pick for those wanting Caribbean on a budget. Great beach!
Disadvantages: Probably not quite up to 5* standards like some other hotels, but we didn't mind!

I stayed at Hotel Palma Real, Varadero, Cuba in September 2005 with a friend. We both had a fantastic holiday. I would rate this as a 3/4 star hotel, as it is typically at the lower end of the pricing for holidays to Varadero. However, don't let this put you off this merely makes it even more value for money! Location# The hotel is situated approximately 150 metres from the beach. Literally cross the road and you are there. Facilities on the beach ...
...we had been staying at hotel that was on the beach itself. Hotel Facilities# The hotel has a large lobby which accomodates the reception, lobby bar and seating area, small shop, hairdressers. Nightly entertainment happens here. There are two swimming pools. One has a pool bar and is usually used for pool sports such as water polo and volley ball. There is also a small gym located behind this pool. The second pool is larger and has a shallow childrens ...

Sol Cayo Guillermo Cuba Best Avoided

Advantages: Fantastic Beach
Disadvantages: Whole Hotel

Have just returned from the Sol Cayo Guillermo. Both my Daughter and I returned with Food Poisoning after spending two weeks at the above resort, The Food is terrible. The Plates are either chipped or are covered in food residue where they have not been washed properly. Hygiene standards are disgusting. Chefs wiping their faces and noses with their hands then picking up and cooking food. They constantly refill the Bain Marie by just topping up ...
...The Al La Carte Restaurants are ok. Management do not care when you finally complain. Beds changed just once during the two week stay. My Daughter received several electric shocks from the Wall Lights one of them threw her across the room and she smashed an Ashtray. She tried to clean it up and cut her hand. The broken glass was under and next to the bed for the following two weeks. The Beach is fantastic fortunately and the pool area is very nice. ...
