Best Hotel in Cuba!
Review of Hotel Nacional de Cuba, Havana by
sophietucker77
Advantages: Location, Luxury
Disadvantages: None
...thought this was the best hotel I've ever stayed in Cuba. We stayed here in June 2007 and had the best holiday ever. Havana is steeped in history and the local people couldn't be more friendly.
The hotel is one of the best on the island and I would highly recommend anyone to stay at this hotel. it has a central location and has very high standards in terms of cleanliness and helpfulness of staff. We were offered a free room upgrade when we told ...

Hotel Parque Central
Review of NH Parque Central, Havana by
LightyN1
Advantages: Classy, clean, corporate, good quality, rooftop pool
Disadvantages: Corporate, magnet for begging
This hotel was billed as one of the best in Havana, so I booked it for the last three nights of my holiday to make sure I ended on a high note.
It was the most 'western' of all of the hotels in which I stayed. It has all the hallmarks of a good quality European hotel, with the obligatory display of marble in the lobby and really good quality, clean rooms that are very well maintained.
It is clearly a sign of quality that there seemed to be quite ... ...that we visited.
The rooftop pool is a real plus, because the hotel is right in the middle of Havana, close to the Capitol building. While it's not right in the heart of the old town, it's close enough for a short walk and there are plenty of taxis right outside to take you anywhere you want to go.
There are two drawbacks with the Parque Central. Firstly it is a tiny bit soulless. Secondly it attracts beggars and scammers, because it's the most ...

La Meson de la Flota
Review of El Meson de la Flota, Havana by
serendipity7
Advantages: Great location in a safe area of Old Havana, Great food & music
Disadvantages: noise from the bar and restaurant downstairs
El Meson de la Flota: Mercaderes b/ Amargura and Teniente Rey. Old Havana, Ciudad de La Habana, situated a few steps from the Old Square.
La Meson de la Flota is found in a safe and renovated area of Old Havana. It is in fact more like a restaurant with rooms rather than a hotel per se, but has the advantage of excellent food at reasonable prices (for tourist eating places - £10 for a lobster brochette, rice and salad - very filling and delicious) ... ...especially Mojitos were great too and won't break the bank (£3-£4 each). The rooms have very high ceilings and are clean and newly painted, although the state of the bathroom lets the place down a bit, with a bit more wear and tear than I would expect in a hotel. However there was a fridge in the room which was a godsend. Room rates vary between £30 - £60 between high and low season. High season is basically December and January, low season ( read: ...

East of Eden?
Review of Islazul Las Terrazas Aparthotel, Havana by
fizzytom
Advantages: Good basic value, good pool
Disadvantages: Lots of steps, stray animals, poor local amenities
...scale and, you've guessed it, Islazul is at the bottom. In fact, the guide books say that Islazul runs the hotels that Cubans stay in and this is true but don't let poor reports in the guidebooks put you off. Islazul does have some properties that you really wouldn't want to stay in if you had a choice. We saw one such place when we arrived in Guanabo, one of the three resorts which makes up Playa del Estes (literally "beaches of the East" of Havana). ... ..."chalets" (more like a brick outhouse) around a central area with an over-crowded pool and blaring music. Rubbish was piled up by the gates and the smell was not very nice.
Instead we made our way along to Playa Santa Maria a more upmarket stretch, closer to Havana where we decided to see if Las Terrazas had any rooms available. It couldn't have been more different. Las Terrazas is about 100 metres from the beach and has fences all around it. You ...

Colonial comfort but no air con
Review of Hostal Beltran de Santa Cruz, Havana by
fizzytom
Advantages: Good location, beautiful building. lovely parrots
Disadvantages: Poor customer service
Hotel Beltran de Santa Cruz is in the heart of old Havana and in a great position for the area's major attractions, as well as paladares, cafés, and bars. The hotel is part of a Cuban chain (Habaganuex), but don't let that put you off. Recently refurbished, it was formerly a colonial merchant's house. You enter by a huge wooden door and are in the reception area, beyond which is the beautiful courtyard. In the corner is a bar where you can also opt ... ...a bit of crusty bread. There are ten rooms and one junior suite over two floors, and all overlook the courtyard. Each room has shuttered doors that can be opened to let in light - ours had no other window and really needed the shutters opens although this limits your privacy. This means you don't get an outside view - just one of the courtyard (or "patio" as its known in Spanish).
There were two large beds, a bathroom with a bath, and a lovely wash ...
