A Cuban paradise
Review of Hotel Playa Pesquero, Holguin by JaynieMo

Advantages: Fantastic hotel, superb facilities, wonderful staff
Disadvantages: You have to leave and go home!

...all inclusive package and the hotel we ended up at, Hotel Playa Pesquero, we got a bargain. We paid 750 quid each for a fortnight. And if we had wanted, we wouldn't have had to spend an extra penny! All inclusive meant all inclusive. 24 hour food and drink and no real extra charge for any hotel facilities. When you think if you go to Spain or Greece self catering for two weeks, the total would shoot up well beyond 750. Anyway, lets get down to ...
...when we arrived at the hotel was beginning to worry me. The airport had holes in the roof and people were running about with buckets. To get into Cuba we had to each go into a cubicle individually where we were spoken to by an officer. It only took about 2 minutes, but I had never been through anything like it before. Then we boarded our bus to take to the 'road' and find our hotel. This was an experience in itself. Cows, horses, trailers packed ... Read review

5* all the way
Review of Paradisus Rio de Oro, Holguin by bouncybabe

Advantages: fantastic room, pool, beach and especially the food
Disadvantages: it rained almost every day we were there

ROOM We had a standard Junior Suite, which was more than adequate for our needs including 2 x queen beds, chaise longue, sky TV, balcony, dressing area and bathroom with powerful shower. All Junior Suites appeared to be very similar, with 16 to each block, positioned in the middle of the resort. FOOD There is the buffet restaurant, 4 a la cartes, beach bar and poolside bar. They all did wonderful food but our favourite was the Japanese, closely ...
...a must-have!) POOL The pool is split into two sections, separated by a waterfall. The water is plesant and not full of chlorine like many pools! The deepest part is about 1.6m, and the shallowest about 60cm, but there is no problem swimming and it was rarely busy. POOLSIDE There are plenty of sunbeds, umbrellas, gazeebos and hammocks. There are two jaccuzis, which are quite cold, but we sat in them and were served champagne like a king and queen! ... Read review

Las Brisas, Guardalavaca, Holguin
Review of Brisas Guardalavaca, Holguin by pingstar

Advantages: Breathtaking scenery, friendly people, inexpensive, historic value, rememorable excursions
Disadvantages: little nightlife, basic food,

The complex consists of both a Hotel and Villa appartments to choose from. The Villa's aren't available off season. We stayed in a one bedroom apartment in the hotel overlooking the main pool area. The room itself was adequate, with it's own shower room. Basic ammenities in the room included a mini bar, fridge and television which received some American channels. Fresh bedding and towels were delivered by maid service. Towels were arranged artisticly ...
...like swans. There are two main buffet restaurants. Although there isn't a wide variety of food, it is fresh and often cooked in front of you. They also have themed nights, where the staff dress up and serve the food. You often see dinner being prepared throughout the day, I remember lying at the pool watching a man roasting a pig on a spit! There are also ala carte restaurants which you receive vouchers for, only one voucher per restaurant, per week ... Read review

Jon & Denise
Review of Sol Rio de Luna y Mares, Holguin by cubantourist

Advantages: Location, comfy beds and loungers, friendly staff (mostly),tours on offer
Disadvantages: Vegetarian Nightmare, Menu selections boastful(drinks too)not Cuban enough ?

A generally friendly and efficient hotel. We travelled with Captivating Cuba. Overall despite hitting the end of a tropical storm we had a great time. Eco Tours did some great tours and we'd especially recommend 'Inside the Countryside' - an opportunity to see life for real in the rural countryside. Ask what tours are available-there are more than advertised generally. A word of warning to Vegetarians-this hotel really needs to get it's act together. ...
...beans cooked with bacon thus making the sometimes limited food selection for vegetarians even more tricky-if you are big on meat you will love it. Bars knock up a good cocktail, but expect no to Mojitas as they had no mint ! Don't be put off though-comfy beds and sunloungers, and generally a willingness to help ... Read review

Occidental Grand Turquesa....needs a bit of TLC
Review of Occidental Grand Playa Turquesa, Holguin by Bianca1984

Advantages: swimming pools, staff, gardens, air conditioning (in rooms)
Disadvantages: a few bin bags, tarantulas!, long walks

This hotel has a little more than meets the eye, but it is still deeply disappointing as a first impression. We paid a very low price, so should have had lower expectations but as the coach pulled up my face dropped. After the brochures and photos I had previously seen I was met with a complex in the middle of nowhere with nothing shouting 'stay here' about it. But once I had passed the bin bags and random matresses I was met with a few key features ...
...swimming pools, the beautiful gardens, the perfectly air-conditioned rooms and the very friendly staff. There were many things wrong with this hotel but these things were great. So if you are willing to overlook a few things they haven't quite got right, then the main things should make you want to stay the week (or two!) and not run for the hills. ... Read review
