Santa Clara Libre - Some Gloom and a View
Advantages: Great views of Santa Clara and beyond; the family connections of the waiter. Disadvantages: Shocking toilets, lack of alcohol in cocktails, lack of food in restaurant
...itself I would say this: Islazul is a state run hotel chain which is second from the bottom in the hierarchy of Cuban hotel chains. People I know who are hardened budget travellers report that it is OK but water supply is intermittent and the rooms are basic but adequate. However, one person told me her room was filthy, while another said their's was reasonably clean. I think it just depends on the day. ...

Lovely relaxing sunshine break
Advantages: A real tropical hideaway Disadvantages: Could be anywhere
I travelled to Cayo Coco in November 09 and had a great time - I booked it 2 weeks before I went and was not sure what to expect. The hotel is only 10 mins from the airport so although it is a 9.5 hr flight the journey is not too bad. Despite this there are not many planes so we weren't troubled by noise. It was annoying though to arrive at the hotel and find our rooms not ready - we had to wait approx an hour. The hotel itself is very spacious, ... ...immediately it feels like another world. Cayo Coco is a small island connected to the mainland by causeway, with its own airport. On one side is the lagoon and the sea and beach on the other. However this is not the real Cuba - and feels like you are miles from anywhere. Some fellow guests had spent a couple of days in Havana prior to their beach break so I think I would do this next time. There are lots of other excursions to choose from such as ...

Sol Cayo Guillermo Cuba Best Avoided
Advantages: Fantastic Beach Disadvantages: Whole Hotel
Have just returned from the Sol Cayo Guillermo. Both my Daughter and I returned with Food Poisoning after spending two weeks at the above resort,
The Food is terrible. The Plates are either chipped or are covered in food residue where they have not been washed properly. Hygiene standards are disgusting.
Chefs wiping their faces and noses with their hands then picking up and cooking food. They constantly refill the Bain Marie by just topping up ... ...The Al La Carte Restaurants are ok. Management do not care when you finally complain. Beds changed just once during the two week stay. My Daughter received several electric shocks from the Wall Lights one of them threw her across the room and she smashed an Ashtray. She tried to clean it up and cut her hand. The broken glass was under and next to the bed for the following two weeks.
The Beach is fantastic fortunately and the pool area is very nice. ...

Fantastic value, but not the lap of luxury we were hoping for
Advantages: Everything included, gorgeous beaches, friendly staff. Disadvantages: Not the real Cuba, trips are very expensive, needs refurbishment
...from two weeks at the Sol Melia Cayo Coco in Cuba and had a fab time. It isn't the best hotel in the world, but it certainly wasn't the worst.
Location: It's in Cayo Coco, which is a small island linked to mainland Cuba by a causeway. It is about 15 minutes from the airport in a coach, which is particularly good after a 10 hour plane journey! There is absolutely nothing on the island apart from hotel complexes, so don't go thinking you are going ... ...17km of beaches and the Sol Cayo Coco is connected to two of them.
Beaches: The beaches are fantastic - exactly what you expect when you go to the Caribbean - with white sands and crystal clear, blue and turquoise waters. The Sol Cayo Coco is directly on one beach and is connected by a rickety bridge to another. We preferred the one accross the rickety bridge as it was quieter and felt a little bit more secluded. Both beaches have plenty of sun ...

Cuba Playa Caleta: Hotel and Service from Hell!
Advantages: Could not find any Disadvantages: A streessful, sickening, waste of time and money
February 2009. Playa Caleta is rated a 4 star. Sunwing Travel advertises it as a Sunwing Club Exclusive...whatever that means? We would call it the ?Club Torture?
The hotel has a spacious, open-concept lobby on two levels. The lobby and the rest of the hotel are filled with cigarette smoke. When we asked the front desk staff if there was any non-smoking public areas, they answered with giggles as they held their lit cigarettes below the counter. ... ...or your children can survive the second-hand smoke that saturates everything, you will still have a family. Buses idled right in front of the open hotel entrance, filling the lobby with carbon monoxide. As we discovered, vehicles in Cuba have no exhaust standards. From scooters to buses, they all spew black or blue smoke. ROOM: There are NO non-smoking rooms. After getting a headache from the stench of stale cigarette smoke, we had to remove the ...
