Culzean Castle - A Great Day Out

Advantages: Something for everyone
Disadvantages: Maybe a bit expensive for some

...be bored stiff, but luckily Culzean Castle make the experience very child friendly, and have quizzes and little competitions for the children to do on their way around. When we went they had put a small Lego figure in every room, and the children had to try and spot the figure. This not only gives the children something to do, but leaves the adults free to read the information leaflets and look properly at the room and its contents. Or that was the ... more

I'll take the castle with the sea view! Blown away by Culzean...

Advantages: Just a spectacular place
Disadvantages: Costly

...Google search we came across Culzean Castle and Country Park. The photos of the location and the buildings were sufficient enough to whet the appetite and justify the midday hour and 15 minute long drive from Glasgow. A designated National Trust site handed over by the Kennedy family in 1945 and declared as Scotland's first country park in 1969 it boasts an array of attractions and plenty of open space. The drive from Glasgow was really pleasant ...
...on in our journey. Traffic was reasonably heavy due to everyone else having the same idea I think but was simple to navigate straight down the M77 and then following signs for Maybole was signposted thereafter. **The Price** I am going to get the negative bit out of the way first.....and even the only negative thing I have to say has a clawback! It was expensive! We had expected free entry to the country park and then to pay for the castle but on ...

Exploring the Nation's Treasures

Advantages: Value for money, inspirational for weekend days out.
Disadvantages: Many properties close up during winter months

I first opted for some kind of annual National Trust Membership years ago when visiting a Scottish property - Culzean Castle. When visiting a National Trust property you are offered the opportunity to sign up to an annual membership, and will get any entry fees refunded for the day. Members of the National Trust for Scotland do qualify for free admittance to the National Trust properties in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and the annual fee is marginally less, and if you join the National Trust for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, you can in fact visit the Scottish properties such as Culzean Castle in Ayrshire that I often visited, along with the sites of those historic battles, Bannockburn and Culloden. However, having let my membership expire a few years ago, a recent trip to a NT property closest to me inspired me to ...

Review of National Trust Annual Membership

Beautiful View

Advantages: Historical Interest, Great Location
Disadvantages: Cost

Belvoir Castle and Estate is located in Leicestershire, approximately 11 miles from Melton Mowbray, and a similar distance from Bingham. I have driven past it several times, and as it is so close to me, I felt it was essential to check it out sooner rather than later, to see if it can offer what my previous castle of choice - Culzean Castle in Ayrshire - offered me and the family for so many years. Entry ------- My first shock on researching it on the internet was the entry fee. It costs a whopping £10 per adult for entry, with only a £1 discount for students and senior citizens. Family tickets were a slightly more reasonable £26, and if it is gardens only you want, it still will set you back £5. Nevertheless, we decided to go, and in fact it was fairly late on when we arrived and I did contemplate purchasing a season ticket ...

Irvine Soap for Irvine Folk

Advantages: See Review
Disadvantages: Not a holiday hot spot, by any means!

can visit Ayr, Prestwick and Troon. Further south of Ayr, is Culzean Castle with its extensive grounds, and gardens. There is also a tiny cottage called Souter Johnnies cottage, which is on the Burns Heritage Trail. There is also a Burns Heritage Museum. In fact there aren?t many places in Ayrshire where you can go, without bumping into a Burns monument. On the way to Culzean Castle there is a road called Electric Brae, which gives you the optical illusion of driving downhill, when you are going uphill, great on a cycle. Troon and Prestwick are great for the golfers, with their famous courses. In Irvine, you can visit Eglinton Park and Castle, and close by Dalgarven Mill Museum. Almost in the centre of town, you can visit the ?Glasgow Vennel? that dates back to Robbie Burns?s times, and indeed he lived here for a short while ...
