the nickname "Manchester of the North", or as we say Manse for short.
Tampere is about 170 km from Helsinki to north. Temperatures are max +28 and min -20 C.
Tampere is more than close to nature. City centre is surrounded by lake and ridge scenery, sited on an isthmus between lakes Pyhäjärvi and Näsijärvi. The Tammerkoski rapids run through the city. There are 200 lakes and ponds in Tampere, and a total of 450 in the entire region. There are numerous nature reserves in Tampere. Pyynikki and Viikinsaari near the city centre are the best known of them. Pyynikki, which was formed by the action of ice and sea more than 10,000 years ago, is the world's highest gravel ridge. At its highest it rises 80 metres above Lake Pyhäjärvi and 160 metres above sea level.

Tamarix (Tamaricaceae) or Tamarisk is, at this time of the year (May), in full bloom - that is, one type is - Tamarisk Tetranda. It is a shrub sometimes growing to the size of a small tree.
It is a particularly delicate looking plant especially when in bloom as it grows with loose slender branches and tiny grey-green leaflets. At the moment these fragile looking branches are covered in frothy plumes of tiny pink flowers. From a distance the general appearance gives the impression of pink haze or even smoke.
This is a plant often seen growing in seaside areas being very wind resistant and also extremely tolerant of salt spray and is also fully to frost-hardy. It usually grows to a height and spread of about twelve feet but can be left to grow into a small tree, which can then look like a pink cumulus cloud.
The Tamarisk is ...

's this what can I see
looks quite like cumulus nimbus to me
would you believe it who'd have thought
a scottish barbie with drookit scots
no-one's moanin' none are bitchin'
we all just pile into the kitchen
the food is gone but there's still more drink
why do scots drink so much? why do you think
so here we are it's quite a throng
some people dancing some singing along
lots of us damp most soaking wet
don't gamble on summer or you'll lose your bet
winter's bad summer's better
though often summer's colder and wetter
so when you plan to cook with fire
do it indoors and you'll keep much drier
DISCLAIMER:
Obviously I am not condoning the practice of cooking over an open flame inside your house...that would be stupid and believe me, when you've burnt one house down, you really don't want to repeat ...
