Tampere is the third largest city in Finland and the largest inland centre in the Nordic countries. Currently there are over 200,000 inhabitants in Tampere, and almost 300,000 inhabitants in Tampere Sub-Region, which comprises Tampere and its neighbouring municipalities. It was also the most attractive city among Finns who plan on moving. At it's my home town, well...use to be..I was born in there.Tampere is also big university city withing two universities, University of Tampere and Tampere University of Technology
Tampere was founded 1775as a market place around Tammerkoski river in 1775 by Gustav III of Sweden and four years later, 1779, it got its full township status.During the later half of 19th century Tampere had almost half of Finland's industrial labour. The town's industrial nature in the 19th and 20th centuries gave it the nickname "Manchester of the North", or as we say Manse for short.
Tampere is about 170 km from Helsinki to north. Temperatures are max +28 and min -20 C.
Tampere is more than close to nature. City centre is surrounded by lake and ridge scenery, sited on an isthmus between lakes Pyhäjärvi and Näsijärvi. The Tammerkoski rapids run through the city. There are 200 lakes and ponds in Tampere, and a total of 450 in the entire region. There are numerous nature reserves in Tampere. Pyynikki and Viikinsaari near the city centre are the best known of them. Pyynikki, which was formed by the action of ice and sea more than 10,000 years ago, is the world's highest gravel ridge. At its highest it rises 80 metres above Lake Pyhäjärvi and 160 metres above sea level.

What to do during your visit in Tampere??? There is lot to do. Tampere is known for its active cultural life. During summer Tampere is main stage for many music and summer festivals. City have old theater traditions, with such established institutions as Tampereen Työväen Teatteri, Tampereen Teatteri (Theater of Tampere) and Pyynikin Kesäteatteri (Summer theater), which is an open-air theatre with the oldest revolving auditorium in Europe.
One must thing during summer is my favorite Särkänniemi amusement park, which includes a dolphinarium (only one in whole Scandinavia!!!) and the landmark Näsinneula tower, topped by a a'la carte a revolving restaurant. There is lot of museums from Lenin Museum to The Museum of Dolls and Costumes and The Spy Museum, many art museums and for kids and other Moomin friends The Muumilaakso Museum, all about Moomins.
And if you still got energy, try our local ice-hockey team matches cause Tampere is known as the hometown on Finnish hockey, we even got hockey museum. Our local ice-hockey teams Ilves and Tappara, both have had great impact on the Finnish ice hockey culture and are the most successful teams in Finland. And if I can say it ILVES which is better!! I have enjoy so many games in Tampere Hakametsä hall. what is arena of our local ice-hockey. Football is also raising its head in the city with Tampere United winning the 2001 and 2006 Finnish championships. Or enjoy "Manserock" (means rock music originating from Tampere.) around local bars in Tampere or dance in many clubs like Onnela, Ilves, Cabare, BePop till morning 4. In Finland clubs and pub's can be open till morning 4, last orders 3.30.
And next day wake up for shopping around our main street Hämeenkatu which runs from east to west. At the east end of the street is the railway station and at the west end the Alexander church. Many shops like Sokos, Stockman, Next, Mecca, etc. etc., and many restaurants are located on the main street.
Try also my favorite sandwish and wishky restautant "Teerenpeli". This bar has own brewery and Whisky Distillery. Their beers have won Gold Medals at the Helsinki Beer Festiva. They produce ciders, ten different beers and Finnish malt whisky. I love to enjoy nice sider in Teerenpeli, and its great place to start evening with friends.
