In Japan there is the custom of entertaining its male and occasionally female customers in a hostess bar. A hostess bar, is a bar and lounge where the customers pay per hour and can drink as much as they like for that hour. A pretty and elegantly dressed lady will sit beside you. She will laugh at your stupid jokes or comments and fawn all over you. When your time is up business cards maybe exchanged between customers and hostesses. Some of the men will endeavor to telephone the hostess and try to secure a date outside working hours. It is not uncommon for these ladies to become mistresses of rich and powerful businessmen.
Payment for the evening is often on a company's expense account, but with the bursting of the bubble economy these are declining. After the bill has been settled then the customer is escorted to the door, into a waiting cab and home to the loyal wife. Prices start from 5,000 yen.
I have been to a number of these establishments, usually at someone else's expense and it is not something I particular enjoy, as I find these places quite false, insincere and phony. However the lingerie bar is a different matter.................
These are very similar to the regular hostess bars, but with one main difference the ladies are clad in lingerie or topless. They come and sit next to you and chat while they pour your drinks. There is usually a time limit which can vary from 40 minutes to 90 minutes with the price staring at 7,000 yen per session. The drinks are usually brandy or whiskey, with beer being extra.
You are allowed to "soft touch" the ladies with their permission as this is part of the service. "Soft touch" is a gentle touching of the body and can do wonders for your heart. Every 20-30 minutes these ladies will put on a strip or dance show. If you buy some fake dollars (1000 yen for three) the ladies will dance near you and you will be allowed to put the notes in their lingerie. Some establishments have other entertainment such as golf shows and water pistols shows, which you will have to use your imagination as to the goings on at these places.
All in all a good experience can be had at these places, but one word of advise, try to go with a Japanese friend or someone who can speak Japanese, as quite often the management and a ladies get a little worried if they cannot communicate.
