I have just returned from a week in Cyprus and have flown for the second time with Cyprus Air. On arrival at Heathrow we were greeted with the news that our 10pm flight was delayed to midnight. Not the best information for me as I'd done a full day's work in London and was in the mood for sleep! However, the airline supplied us with a written food voucher for £5. I'd already eaten dinner but wasn't going to let a freebie go to waste - especially as I knew we'd probably get a meal onboard!
After not much choice, (Burger King, a bar/pasta place shutting for the evening or Pret A Manger) we settled on Pret - I got 2 cakes, 2 bags of crisps and a drink for, yes you guessed it, £5 exactly!
Walking around Heathrow and wasting time just wanting to sleep was the worst bit but eventually we boarded and took off around 11.45 pm. I had an aisle seat - the plane had a 2, 4, 2 seating across and we were in the middle. As I'm 5 foot 9 I didn't find the leg room too bad. I find I have about the same amount when I'm on a Qantas flight for 22 hours!
The pilot didn't really give us any flight information so we didn't know the flight path, the time of the flight or what the altitude was. The pilot spoke primarily in his own language and then translated afterwards to English.
The bonus this time was that we had a more modern aircraft. I last flew with them in 1999 and we didn't have ANY entertainment which was pretty yawnsville for close on 5 hours. My parents had warned me so I took reading matter but this time around I knew I'd probably be sleeping!
However, we had our own individual screens in the back of the seats in front and the pull down tables had a button to push - also if you wanted a drink without using the table there was a small holder to place it in. The hot meal was chicken and fettuccini with a tomato sauce, broccoli and carrots. There was also a tuna and prawn salad with a dressing to pour on, roll and butter, a small chocolate cake and cheese and biscuits. I found the meal quite nice - even after being woken up at 1am by the flight attendant!
The films were fairly recent - Die Another Day, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Analyse That (and Jerry Maguire!) There were other channels with cartoons for the kids.
I found the flight passed fairly quickly and without incident (or so I thought!). My friends, who were seated about 10 rows behind us, informed me later that a drunk woman had been seated near them, with a steward next to her, calming her down for the whole flight! I find this a bit offputting as I thought flights were trying to stop this kind of behaviour onboard. We'd seen the woman been taken towards the back of the plane (visibly being held up)! She was in a state of undress and was definitely "worse for wear". I'm just glad she was seated at the back and far from me because I've had my fair share of nervous passengers, and I find it most unsettling.
Overall I'd say that the airline is a good one to travel with. The staff are helpful (and patient!), the leg room isn't bad and the food is pretty good. I used the wash room just once - the one right at the back of the aircraft which was situated on the left of the aisle on the left hand side. One of the stewards was sitting at the back and pointed it out to me as I'd passed it!
Once at Larnaca, you descend onto the concourse (remember doing that?!) and are transported to the airport terminal by buses, again very efficiently.
The delay actually worked to our advantage in the end because instead of a 4am arrival, we got in at 6am and by the time we arrived at the hotel, it was time for another meal - breakfast!

Review of Cyprus Airways
Advantages: Beuatiful Scenery, Very friendly People, Cheap Living (Alcohol, Food, Cigarettes - if applicable), Packed full of activities (especially for trekkers and the adventerous holiday-er), If look hard (-and in unusual places, will find good cheap accomodation) Disadvantages: Not much to do in terms of clublife (unless travel to the nearest biggest city of Paphos), Can be very hot during summer months (although not as much as Dubai for example)
