A Very Greek Drama amidst the Roman Ruins
Advantages: Beautiful Views. Well preserved mosaics. Disadvantages: Physically demanding. Needs a decent time investment to explore fully.
...the archaeological site of Ancient Kourion (or Curium in Latin), which is well known for its amphitheatre, beautiful views, and well preserved floor mosaics. GETTING THERE The site is closest to the town of Episkopi, about 15km west of Limassol on the Akrotiri peninsula. Episkopi is clearly signposted from the main Limassol to Paphos motorway, and once you get to the town, simply follow the brown heritage signs to the site. ADMISSION ... ...down the coast to Limassol. Kourion is the best place for paragliding on the island, and its easy to lose time following the hypnotic dance of various multi-coloured kites and gliders as they carry their pilots across the wipe-tipped surf. The mosaics themselves are impressive and well preserved. There are strategically placed information plaques explaining their content and relevance in both Greek and English and I took my time reading them and ...

Sunny Cyprus
Advantages: already warm in early spring Disadvantages: couldn't find any in the short time
The winter last year was long and cold so we decided to spend the free week we have around Carnival (Ash Wednesday was on 1st March) somewhere warm, after consulting the international weather forecast we opted for Cyprus. We chose the town of Larnaka in the middle of the south coast, 16 km east of the airport, we found a nice hotel on the beach 6 km east of the town centre. From its position we concluded Larnaka would be a good starting point for ... ...were approaching Cyprus by plane the pilot told us that there was low visibility due to a dust storm from the Sahara, Larnaka airport was open, yet the one in Pafos was closed. My back bottom! I had read the guide book from cover to cover but had found nothing about sandstorms, the Cypriot woman sitting next to us informed us that dust storms were not a frequent but a regular phenomenon, they came once or twice a year. When we landed the worst was ...

Kolossi Castle - King Richard's Cypriot Des Res?
Advantages: Well preserved, maintained and evocative ruins. Disadvantages: Thoughtless graffitti. Unsympathetc local development.
...OF THE CASTLE Kolossi castle was built in the thirteenth century after the Frankish Lusignan king of the time, Hugh the First, granted the area to the Knights of the Order of St John, a medieval order whose mission was to protect and provide aid to pilgrims to the Holy Land (which gave rise to their more colloquial title – the Knights Hospitaller). King Richard the Lionheart was reputed to have spent some time here, but given the dates he was ... ...just outside the village of Kolossi which gives it it’s name. It is about 11 kilometres due west of Limassol and is clearly signposted from the main Limassol – Paphos A6 highway. EXTERIOR WALK-AROUND The castle is a three storey single block tower, surrounded on three sides by ruins of various stone outbuildings, and most substantially, the remains of a long-ruined chapel. There was an archaeological team from Germany working on site when we ...

Globalisation Alert! Mall Rats Invade Cyprus!
Advantages: Good facilities. Well appointed. Light and airey. Air conditioned. Disadvantages: Eye-wateringly expensive. Could be anywhere in the world
INTRODUCTION In the seven or eight years I have been going to Cyprus for my holidays, a lot has changed, and not necessarily for the better. It was only a matter of time before this beautiful island was afflicted with the relentless influx of multinational American brands and corporations that seem to blight Europe these days. The drive down the Finikoudes – Larnaka’s main, palm-lined seaside promenade – now takes you past McDonald’s, KFC, ... ...and dismay that I received the news that Cyprus had been “blessed” with two new malls since my last visit two years ago – the “Mall of Cyprus”, built next to an IKEA on the outskirts of Lefkosia (Nicosia), and the newer “My Mall”, an even bigger retail mecca (complete with bowling lanes and an ice skating rink) on the outskirts of Lemesos (Limassol). The hot weather, boredom, and a sort of morbid curiosity compelled me to go out and seek one of these ...
