For a short 2 night break we decided to do something different last August, so we booked a 2 night mini cruise from Newcastle to amsterdam via DFDS Seaways.

We used their website to book which was an easy to navigate site with no problems. Everything worked when you clicked on it.
We payed £59 each which included a complimentary breakfast onboard.

For this price we were given a 4 berth inside cabin on the lower decks of the ship.

The room was fine, ok, not exactly the Ritz. It was clean and basic. The 4 beds were actually bunks which wasnt really a problem either. The room also had an ensuite toilet / shower.

The ship offers what I would consider to be plentyful. There are various bars, restaurants, cinema, nightclub, mini casino, swimming pool and childrens play areas.

I found the bar was pleasant but a little pricey. The restaurants were of a buffet type and again were pricey for the quality on offer. The food was good, but I wouldn't say it was great. Wine was a little expensive too at about 25euros a bottle of decent plonk.

We enjoyed a few drinks in the bar, then a meal in the restaurant later. Somewhat tired we opted for bed by approx 11pm. (We set sail at 6.30pm)

Going to bed and trying to sleep was an experience even though we were tired. The lower decks of the ship are quite noisey but when you have bad neighbours (Young Thugs) next door it makes matters worse. The room walls are thin and you can hear just about everything whether you want to or not!

So we arrived in Amsterdam somewhat worse for wear. I felt like I could have just stayed on the ship and slept whilst it was quiet but there was a notice in the cabin that the authorities expect you to go ashore!!!! (Must be a common thing seeing as some of these cruises have the reputation of being The Booze Cruise, I imagine people party on the ship whilst at sea and sleep whilst in port at Amsterdam).

Once in port we transfered to a complimentary coach bound for the centre of Amsterdam. (You have a choice here, you can either opt for an hours sightseeing on the coach or just a direct 20min transfer)

We went on the 1 hr sightseeing tour and it was ok. It was good to see some of Amsterdam in this way. Bearing in mind your only ashore for approx 8 hours till your ship sails home.

The bus then dropped us off outside the Victoria Hotel, opposite the central station in Amsterdam. (Please see review on this hotel I have written also if your interested in staying in Amsterdam)

We spent a cpl of hours walking around Amsterdam, a few bars, spot of lunch then the coach picked us up at 4pm for our return to the ferry.

The return crossing was very similar to the outward.

In all, it was a nice change, it was different and a bit of an adventure really. If your looking to fill a cpl of days I would have to recommend this for the above reasons. However, if you want to arrive in Amsterdam relaxed and somewhat fresher, I would fly to Schipol via KLM airways. (We flew from Newc to Ams for £69).

I cant really knock DFDS, they offer a trip on a budget really. Although you can upgrade cabins at a premium.

Recommended - give it a go.

Brings back some very hazy memories. Used to use these ferries a lot. sometimes the crossing was as much fun as the Dam!
