A nothing-but-beautiful building from the outside and in. The Gellert Hotel is as grand as hotels (I've stayed in) come. But then I admit, my usual retreat is in a youth hostel or campsite, I was fortunate enough one year to stay in the Hotel Gellert for a weekend as a Birthday present.
As you enter the hotel the foyer is as grand as you would imagine and pleasantly filled (in the evening) with the echoing sound of the resident harp ... ...the foyer bar.
The rooms were (to someone who hadn't travelled that far east previously) a little unusual in the "20's meets 70's" decor. Although, the rooms were comfortable, clean and tidy the style just added to the awe of being in a whole other country.

A nothing-but-beautiful building from the outside and in. The Gellert Hotel is as grand as hotels (I've stayed in) come. But then I admit, my usual retreat is in a youth hostel or campsite, I was fortunate enough one year to stay in the Hotel Gellert for a weekend as a Birthday present.
As you enter the hotel the foyer is as grand as you would imagine and pleasantly filled (in the evening) with the echoing sound of the resident harp to entertain the guests and visitors having a drink in the foyer bar.
The rooms were (to someone who hadn't travelled that far east previously) a little unusual in the "20's meets 70's" decor. Although, the rooms were comfortable, clean and tidy the style just added to the awe of being in a whole other country.
The Hotel Gellert is famous for its spa baths, one inside and one out. They are gorgeously pampering and once you get comfortable in the warm mineral intoxicated water you wont want to move, especially not plunge into a cold swimming pool as expected (but optional). I did choose to experience the cold plunge once, and I'm glad I did.
The hotel is within walking distance of many places of interest, mainly a wonderful large market on the other side of the river full of Hungarian trinkets and treats, set inside another grand traditional building (make sure you look upwards to see the colourful roof tops!). You will also find the Gellert is within travelling (by taxi or tram) distance from the town centre and more places of interest (I chose an evening at a Hungarian Gypsy Folk Concert which was brilliant!).
Whilst staying in the Gellert I did find that being a vegetarian was a problem. If you are vegetarian and considering staying at the Hotel Gellert I would recommend you buy your own protein as whilst I was staying I generally ate just a plate of vegetable for dinner. Very fresh and delicious though.
The Hotel Gellert is a wonderful hotel to stay on your Budapest holiday, be prepared to pay for views, or luxury, or more than a shower and bed but rooms seem to start around Ł45 (66 euros).
