Dartmoor located in DevonEngland is one of the most spectacular of the British national parks. It is easy to get to, as it is located just 30 minutes from the end of the M5 motorway. Accommodation can be in the form of small guesthouses and hotels to camping on and off campsites all around the moor.
The countryside is very baron but very scenic, the terrain is slightly hilly so can be hard going when walking distances on the moor but the scenery makes up for it. You can see natural Pete bogs on the moor as well as a vast array of wild flowers. Wildlife is extremely common on the moor; I have seen various birds of prey including the kestrel, lots of deer and wild horses.
Activities on the moor include walking, pony trekking, birdwatching, watersports and a whole host more. My particular visit included 1 week of hiking right across the moor which was brilliant visiting lots of the small villages and spending most of the time following small streams and camping in the wilderness. Our walk included one day of laziness on horse back which was brilliant and one who hasn’t been on a horse should all the horses are tame and a fun day out for anyone. We passed various places such as the notorious Dartmoor prison, and Widecombe the home of the world famous Widecombe fair that is mentioned in Uncle Tom Cobleys nursery rhyme.
I would personally recommend Dartmoor to anyone there is so much to do and see, and is a lovely place to go to get away from the stresses of modern life. There are activities to suit all ages and abilities and you can visit for the day or longer if you want. Dartmoor is great all year round and no season is better than another unless you have a fear of rain.
One word of warning get a map before you venture onto the moor as there are lots of military training grounds and I assure you, that you do not want to run into a royal marine ambush on your afternoon stroll. Weather is unpredictable to always be prepared with waterproofs as well as sun block as I have experienced the weather change quickly.

Good op. I'm lucky enough to live on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, and wild horses wouldn't get me to travel abroad. Give me the moors any day!

Thanks for that review, I'm going to Dartmoor in the Summer on a residential visit with children, and the barrenness certainly appeals to me. I'm a keen walker and looking forward to all that open space!
