The Dartmoor Railway is just that, it is a railway that takes you from Okehampton up to Meldon Quarry (right on the edge of the moor). Okehampton station is not part of the National rail network, although there is a link to the main line at Exeter. The station has been lovingly restored to how it would have been in the 1950's
In fact Okehampton station was once part of the Southern Railway, and was on their main route down into Cornwall, ... ...They call the service "The Dartmoor Pony"
** Where is it? **
Okehampton station is situated just on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon, it is easy to find from the main A30 from Exeter. There are the brown tourist signs pointing you in the correct direction.
There is a large car park, which is pretty flat.
There are buses from Okehampton town centre (about 1 mile away) but I couldn't really tell you frequency.

Advantages: Great for familes, one entrance price. Disadvantages: Lack of seating in the play area.
...sitting watching the children. This I think would be my only gripe. Despite the huge play area there were only three or four benches to sit on. Being very quet this meant we always had somewhere to sit but a litttle uncomfortable after a while.
When the weather is warmer and the outside attractions are open, you can also have a go at finding your way around the maze made from trees. Or you could take a trip around the grounds on the Lynbarn railway which has been recently restored. Apparently it has some fabulous views over the North Devon coast and dartmoor, so well worth a trip.
And just incase the children need to burn off a bit more energy there is an outdoor wooden assault course.
The large grounds include a lake with an island in the middle, along with a big arena for the Birds of Prey and flying ferret shows.
