I had to go to Bristol a few days ago and tried to get a hotel booking at short notice-hoping to go on the train. If I drive, it takes ma a good 4 hours on the motorway and you can't really relax like you can on the train. Anyway, there were no hotels available at a reasonable price so I decided that I had to drive.
The next issue was where to stay if I did. The M5 has several service stations and I had stayed at Michaelwood services previously. I hadn't tried Gordano, so I logged onto the Laterooms website and looked at the rooms available- success! There was an executive room on the night I wanted so I rang laterooms and booked it.

HOW TO GET THERE Take Junction 19 off the M5. Follow the signs for Gordano Service Area, the hotel is adjacent to the main service area. Reception is manned 24 hours a day.
Well, I drove there and arrived absolutely tired out but glad to get there. I heard some birds whistling but didn't work out what they were.
The first thing that happened was that Laterooms hadn't been correct in saying that there was an executive room available and the lady behind the desk couldn't understand why I was cross when she told me that there wasn't one. Anyway she said there was a standard room and did I want it? Having driven 200 miles i was unlikely to say no, so I took it and asked if I could connect to the internet- she said yes, so I was happy.
The room was a standard Days Inn room, clean, comforatble, tidy and big enough to swing a dozen cats if I wanted. There were spare pillows and towels, and plenty of tea and coffee. The shower was over a bath and nice and hot. The soap is in a squeezable dispenser attached to the wall- not easy if you have difficulty with your hands/joints and find squeezing hard. Perhaps tablets of soap might be better ( I know people steal them but if you are old or handicapped you can't wash easily with these things!!)
FOOD? The nearby services do have a KFC and a Burger King as well as a shop that sells newspapers and sweets etc, so I had no need to go hungry.
Breakfast was £3.99 and you could come to the reception area for a continental breakfast of a sort. There were tea and coffee, cereals, fresh fruit, yoghourt, croissants and toast and preserves. Not a lot of variety but the cereal boxes were big and you could have as much as you wanted. The only drawback was that the little tables that were for breakfast were in reception and there were smokers and loud salesmen around. It wasn't a relaxing experience.
You do get a free newspaper which is a plus point.
THE MOTEL Is a pleasant 2 storey building and has 60 bedrooms. There are family rooms and disabled facilities if you ask. The carparking is free and you can take small pets (Ollie didn't come with me this time but I might ask another time) . There are non -smoking rooms. I think all rooms should be non-smoking-if you are in aroom next to smokers it comes through the walls!!!! I am not joking!
Outside is a lovely little fountain and there's an aviary- that's where I heard the birds. It's unusual! There are lots of trees and bushes surrounding the motel- and these act as a soundbreaker from the traffic noise.
It is a little walk (probably 50 yards) to the services building. I didn't like walking back from there at night. It was lit, but it would have been easy for someone to jump out of the bushes and get me. I was quite nervous.
Overall, a very good place to stay, either on your way down the M5 to the West country or on the way to Bristol. I would go again!
