My fiancee and I fancied a few days away at a nice hotel and after our usual scourering of hotel web sites, review web sites etc al we opted for the De VereCarden park with is located just outside of Chester. We booked a King room with a golf course view for £145 per room including breakfast, not cheap, but this is 4* hotel with a spa, golf courses, plenty of ground and we were staying over a weekend which bridged the English and Welsh school half terms.
The hotel is set in extensive groups, part of which are the 2 golf courses and driving range which forms part of the hotel
complex, there is a marvelous mile long, gently winding driveway leading up to the hotel which has a massive frontage and
altough not an historic building is quite pleasing to the eye.
The check in was carried out swiftly as the desk had 3 staff on it, and after the normal form filling (car registration
etc)
and credit card swiping had been done we were given the key to our room which was located on the 1st floor,
overlooking the golf course. At the time of check in the computer system controlling the doors was locked so a member
of staff had to escort us to let in the room but they had plenty of staff and within an hour or so they had staff on every
floor to speed the process up even further and by 7 p.m the problem had been completely resolved.
Anyway back to the room, the room was quite large and the normal 'L' shape room, and pleasantly decoarated in pastel shades. There was a queen size bed which was very high and virtually made you feel like royalty, there was the mandatory bed side cabinets each side. Opposite the bed was a desk and chair, which also acted a dressing table as the mirror was mounted above it and the supplied hair dryer was in the desk drawer. To the left of this was another unit which the large, flat screen LCD TV was sat, this had the normal testerial channels plus the basic sky channels (including sky sports) and radio channels, it also had pay per view movies (often in several different languages) including something for the more discerning adult viewer (if you get what I mean). This unit contained a small fridge which was very handy. There was an average size built in wardrobe in which was an iron, ironing board and a personal digital safe.
The bath room was also slightly above average size with a standard white toliet, sink and bath above which was a very good powerful shower, pleasant toiletries (shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and soap) were supplied along with soft white towels.
We both ate and had a few drinks at the hotel. Bar prices were about the same as an upmarket pub in any UK city and the service was great as their was waiter service during the early evening and you also got a complementary bowl of nibbles which was a pleasant suprise. The hotel as 2 resturants, one is a Brasserie style and the other a full a la carte resturant known as Redmonds or the garden resturant, we chose the latter as they had a deal of 3 courses for £30 per head, with a selection of about 6 or 7 choices for each course The service was great and food of a good quality and well presented as well as the 3 courses a final coffee was also included, Redmonds itself is also a lovely venue as part of it is in the newly added conservatory and much of the seating in very cosy booths.
Breakfast is also served in Redmonds and is equally good. There was the full array of full English (sausage, bacon, beans, fried bread, hash browns etc) on a self serve basis whilst eggs and omlettes are cooked to your liking by the chefs whilst you wait. There is also a good range of cereals (along with a choice of semi-skimmed or full fat milk) and contiental items to choose from including muffins :-)
The hotel has a great spa and gym, use of which is included in the room price. We didn't have any treatments but did use the other facilities. The pool is about 20 metres long with a pleasant temperature and a friendly depth of 1.4 meters throughout, at the end is the jacuzzi. Then you have the armotherapy steam room, the normal steam room and sauna, plus 2 multi-jet showers and a 'bucket' shower. Towels are also provided. The gym area, although not huge, is well equipped with the latest treadmills, bikes and rowing machines, a selection of weight machines and 3 wall mounted plasma screens to keep you entertained.
In all I would highly recommend the hotel but do look around for the best price, there are often good deals to be had for a Sunday night stay.
