A grand northern experience

Advantages: rooms - service- pool -
Disadvantages: maybe slightly pricey

*Arrival & check in*

After a long drive from Oxfordshire up to Leeds, we were very happy to reach our destination. The elegant driveway spans past the golf course as it ...
...gives an impression of finesse and classic English sophistication. The gardens and floral displays are excellently cared for and planned and the architecture of Oulton Hall itself is breathtaking.
A large marble lobby is awaiting us after we walk through the door that the concierge eagerly holds open. The hotel from its first appearance has a huge impact of something grand and very special.
The reception area is large and clean with ... more

A nice place to stay

Advantages: Luxury, Good Service, Pleasant surroundings
Disadvantages: Always busy and crowded

We have stayed at Oulton Hall twice in the last few months and it is a good hotel. Not quite 5*, but nevertheless good value for money. We paid £90 B&B per room on one occasion and £115 B&B on the other - booked online. The hotel has an imposing frontage, and is surrounded by parkland - the views and the setting are good and in the summer months it will be very pleasant indeed. Reception, Concierge and Porterage were all good and the atmosphere ...
...were nothing special - good standard, clean and spacious but considering what were paying reasonable value for money. The food was special - we ate in the Restaurant twice and the service was just so, not rushed nor slow and the ambience was fine. A pianist played on both occasions to add to the atmosphere. The meals were delicious and some of the signature dishes awesome. The Leisure Centre (Indoor Pool, Spa etc) was good quality but was busy when ...

total disappointment

Advantages: not far from the M62
Disadvantages: got a lot less than expected from a 5 * hotel

took 3 phone calls before they actually reserved the interconnecting rooms I asked for. Rooms were supposed to be available by 3.00pm. At 4.30pm we were still waiting for the childrens rooms to be cleaned. The cover on the tv standby switch was missing, showing the circuit board. Great for little fingers. The bath cold water tap could'nt be turned and the knob on the shower in the childrens room came of in my hand. The fascia underneath the sink ...
...an 18 inch tear in the duvet cover. No disabled bays in the parking area near reception and parking was a nightmare. Small bays and people were parking anywhere. The ramp was steep (to say the least) and lopsided. My husband had to walk at my side to stop me falling of my electric scooter and the children had to push as the scooter was'nt made for such climbs. We ordered meals in the rooms but had to ask for a table as my children had a small one ...

Honeymoon hotel disaster

Advantages: Leisure complex, off the tourist route
Disadvantages: Staff seemed uninterested in the guests

After her wedding in early April, my daughter and her new husband decided to take a few days honeymoon in a quiet location away from all tourists and holiday makers (they both work in the tourist industry). Following an extensive search they plumped for four nights in a suite in a five-star luxury hotel outside Leeds, the De Vere Oulton Hall hotel. The agent made a point of explaining to the hotel that this was a special holiday. When they arrived at lunchtime on the Sunday following their wedding in Cheshire, they were told that because the room was not ready, they should go away and come back later!!!!!! Room service delivered incorrect meals, breakfast was sent up with no cutlery and was cold by the time they had themselves collected some from the dining room, bathrobes were torn and needed mending, carpet gripper strips were ...
