Firstly, this is a beautiful building. It's also ideally situated if you don't want to be driving too much as it's slap in the heart of the city.
I've stayed there twice now with my partner and she and I share the same opinion. Both times we've had one of their "executive double rooms" and been very impressed with it. The rooms have been comfortable and the beds very luxurious.
Our experiences with the customer service have been rather more patchy. The first morning we were there we opted for breakfast in bed. The tray of food that arrived, while exactly what we ordered was largely cold and inedible, the scrambled eggs, especially, looking as though they'd bounce if they were dropped! My recommendation would be to go for the cereal if you're having breakfast in your room. Or to go down to the ballroom for breakfast. Whenever we've gone down for breakfast we've been lucky enough to be seated in the window overlooking a park and thoroughly enjoyed both the food and the experience.
The staff, in our experience, fell into one of two categories - either "helpful and efficient" or "friendly but hopeless". Oh, with a couple of "impolite and incompetent" thrown in for good measure. On our first stay my partner had a taxi ordered to take her to a hairdressing appointment. When it arrived the driver was told by a member of staff that we'd checked out and went away again, necessitating another cab and causing my partner to miss her appointment. A member of the staff at reception was so disrespectful that we formally complained by email to their Customer Service manager.
On our most recent stay, three bar staff took a quarter of an hour to prepare two cocktails, without any other orders from other customers having gone in - they just didn't know how to.
On the whole, it's a lovely hotel and if you get lucky with the staff, you'll have a wonderful stay. I think that my partner and I may be staying elsewhere when next we're in Cambridge, though.
