Located in the West Bank (Israel), the top of the lake is just a few kilometres from the Palestinian territory of Jericho.
Apart from the forever shrinking lake which is an amazing 419 meteres below sea level and continuing to drop, the surrounding area is something that surprised me. I supposed that I hadn't expected anything in particular but the deserty Sinai like landscape that surrounds it is amazingly lunar. From the Israeli/Palestinian side, you have the arid hills behind you which make Jerusalem and the Judean Mountains seem like a far away land and looking opposite across the water you have Jordan facing you. From the Jordanian side, it's vice-versa but equally as impressive.
Whilst the northern shores may be beautiful, the beaches are quite dear (yes, you have to pay to go to the Dead Sea in most places) and they tend to be quite busy with tourists coming from Jerusalem. It is probably worth your time to head down to Ein Gedi where not only can you camp for free but also enter the sea without paying, the beach isn't particularly pretty, with a kind of gritty soil feel to it but the reason you are there is for the amazing dead sea! Do all you can to try not to float but there's absolutely no way you'll get beneath the surface in this amazingly buoyant little piece of water.
The reason behind it is the high salinity and with it's not just all fun - if you have any cuts it will sting to high heaven and likewise you should refrain from wetting your clothes with the water or there's a good chance they'll be stained forever. Bathe and wash off with fresh water then return to your things!
Another reason to go to Ein Gedi is to visit the nearby ancient fortress of Masada from where you also get a wonderful view of the Dead Sea below.
Advantages: An unusual experience, good for the skin Disadvantages: A long walk, the salty water may sting after a while
~Summary~
The Dead Sea, this was the main reason for my trip to Israel. The healing properties of the waters may be overstated, but you can't go to Israel and not experience mudpacks and swimming in the salty water. The resorts are well equipped with showers, lockers, toilets, restaurant and products to take back home. The actual Dead Sea waters are receding so it is a long walk to the water edge, but there is a land train if you have trouble walking ... ...skin.
~Introduction~
The Dead Sea is in Israel and is shared with Jordan. The Dead Sea is renowned for its revitalising properties and products from the Dead Sea area include mud masks, bath salts and other bathing items. The Dead Sea is also below sea level in a valley and has very high salt levels, as such there are no living creatures in the water. The salt levels are so high that you cannot immerse yourself face down in the sea and can only ...

Advantages: Sitt and chill out Disadvantages: Dont get water in your eyes it hurts
I visited the dead sea about 10 years ago now and still remember it very well. We visited for an afternoon on a trip from Jerusalem. The drive was breathtaking through the desert and beduin camps, and down to the dead sea. The temperature was scorching hot between 35-40c and quite humid near the sea. It ws amazing to get in and sit in the sea and fload without worrying about swimming, all pools on holiday should be like this. I sat and read the paper ... ...about the mud of the dead sea containing healling properties well i believe as our mud fight cured my heat rash. Only thing is dead sea is on isralels border and you have to put up with guard towers and the odd soldier. I recomend anyone go to israel but maybe hold off for a few years until it settles down. Well worth the wait ...

Advantages: Nowhere else like it on earth! Disadvantages: Not a great choice of accommodation
The Dead Sea is amazing! We stayed for two nights at the Ein Gedi youth hostel and it was fantastic. You really can read a newspaper as you float in the Dead Sea. The oxygen level is much higher than the rest of the year (I was told between 8 and 10 percent higher). There are interesting sites to see, such as Masada and Qumran (where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found.) Sunbathing is fun, with huge free parasols at Ein Gedi. But don’t try to drink the ...

Advantages: A chance to see a little bit of heaven on earth Disadvantages: depending on how you travel & the crowds of visitors.
for swimming in. These lakes were hot with volcanic action in the bottom. They smelled strongly of sulpher. We all stripped off and plunged in, several of us swam to the far side, hot bubbles bounced up and hit our stomachs, rather scarey really!,
We dried off before the impromptu cookers were produced for our breakfast.
Again we took to the road, further east until we came to the borders of California and Nevada, where the landscape changed dramatically. Finally down to a barren beach. We had reached Mono Lake, a salt lake with statues of salt pillars rising dramatically from the still waters. All was still, nothing moved, the occassional bird flitted from reed to grass. This reminded me of the Deadsea in Israel. There you could see across to Jordan. There was a hotel nearby and people bathed. Here no-one went in, it was ...

husbands excema improved dramatically after a few days bathing in the DeadSea.
For anyone wanting to visit the DeadSea but are wary of doing so via Israel, Jordan is a great alternative. We felt safe throughout our travels in Jordan.
The only disadvantage was that most of the hotels are purely resort hotels and there is very little to do other than swim/float in the DeadSea. Consequently you have to pay hotel prices to eat and drink which can be costly.
The cost of staying here is about £150 per night for two people. We stayed as part of a package. The additional treatments I had cost about 70 pounds but included use of an exclusive spa and private pool.

I love this country. not only because i was born there but mainly because it is what the bible says it is : Paradise. for me being in london right now indoors (raining again) is like putting a lion in a box just a bit bigger then the lion and expect it to be happy. i am that lion and i miss lots of things in israel but i'll only share one trip i have done (a track) with some family members about two years ago (just before coming to london).
well, i have been in the israeli army for 3 years and learned a lot from it and one of the things i took with me from being there is the love for survival skills, navigation, and the ability to be in the wierdest situations and come out alive. and so one of my biggest hobbys became nature trips (with not too much aquipment and lots of skills). this time we went to the south of israel, to the deadsea ...
