The Delfin Azul is a fairly modern hotel in the quieter part of Alcudia, although its only a 20 minute walk from the old town, 30 mins from the port area and 5-10 minutes from the beach (across a busy road with steep kerbs - be warned if you have a pushchair or wheelchair).

We were looking for a relatively cheap, relaxing holiday in May for us and our two boys, aged 2 and 4. We spent a while looking at hotels and resorts before settling on the Delfin Azul in Alcudia. And I'm glad we made that choice. For information on Alcudia, see my separate review of the resort.
The reception area is large, with light-coloured marble decor and doors leading to the entertainment lounge and to the large pool area. The reception staff and friendly and helpful, with very good English. The lifts are small, but there are 3 of them, so you shouldn't have much bother getting to your floor. Rooms are small but functional - but theres plenty storage space. We had two single beds pushed together like a double and bunk beds for the kids. Our room was on the opposite side of the hotel from the pool but we had lovely views towards the port area and old town, and the nearby mountains. The streets outside are very quiet, even late at night, so children can sleep easily. Only two problems in the room - 1) air con was being serviced and was out of action for the first few days, 2) the balcony lights go off automatically at around 11pm - not ideal if you want to sit out and have a drink or read a book.
The entertainment lounge is large, with a separate TV area that shows Sky Sports and Sky News throughout the day. Evening entertainment comprises a kids disco, a quiz, bingo, etc. We were also treated to a great free parrot show. Also at night, a bouncy castle is erected at the pool area for the kids.
During the day, the pool area is never overcrowded (this was May - don't know what it would be like in July/August). There are plenty of inflatables left lying around by previous guests if you don't want to buy your own. The adult pool is large and deep and plays host to a daily all-invited waterpolo match. Poolside entertainment consists of music, quizzes, free SCUBA lessons and waterpolo for the adults. The kids get a variety of things including table tennis, flying saucers (frisbee), parrot shows, reptile shows, darts, etc.
Food in the hotel (we were half board) was excellent. Breakfast was the usual mix of continental and full-English breakfast. Dinner was much more varied with a choice of at least 4 or 5 main courses and an evern larger range of desserts. Most meat dishes were of a very high standard, but some of the fish dishes were a bit too bony for my liking. Childrens food was varied and generally healthy, although chips was on the menu every day. Wine selection in the restaurant was disappointing so we tended to stick to bottled water. Don't get tempted to buy sangria off the drinks menu for 10 euros! The same bottle is on sale just down the street for 1,20 euros. And it tastes awful anyway. Otherwise bar prices are quite reasonable - 2.90 euros for a pint of San Migel. Theres a small supermarker 30 seconds walk from the front door where you can stock up on cheap booze.
Transfer from the airport should take about an hour. Highly recommended hotel and resort. And it wont break the bank.
Advantages: Great for kids Disadvantages: near a main road
i went to this hotel in october 2006, there was me, my husband, my 6 month old, 2 adult friends and their children who were 4 and 10.
it was suited very well for children there was:
childrens section for the buffet
childrens pool
arcade

play area
there are plenty of things for the children to do out side of the hotel, there are arcades, trampolines ... ...the usual, plenty of bars around and some good offers, it is about 5 minute walk to the main shops and bars but there are plenty around the hotel. It wasn\'t loud either.
The rooms were clean and rooms cleaned everyday. The hotel was nice and reception helpful. i went for a week and the half board buffet was different everyday, i had plenty of choice and i am a vegetirian. The salads were nice aswell as they were quite plain so you could make your ...

I HAD MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT VISITING ALCUDIA.WE TRAVELLED WITH THIMPSONS AND STAYED AT THE DELFINAZUL HOTEL WHICH IS SITUATED JUST OFF THE MAIN ROAD RUNNING THROUGH THE TOWN.THE HOTEL WAS WELL KEPT BUT BASIC.THE RESORT ITSELF CATERS FOR JUST ABOUT EVERYONE FROM LARGE GROUPS OF LADS TO THE FAMILY.THE BEACH IS WITHIN EASY ACCESS OF THE MAIN ROAD WHERE ALL THE HOTELS ARE BASED.AND A WALK TO THE BEACH SHOULD TAKE NO MORE THAN 5 MINUTES.FOR THOSE WHO MISS THE TASTE OF HOME THERE IS A KFC AND A BURGER KING ON THE MAIN ROAD.ALTOGETHER NOT A BAD LITTLE RESORT AND REMEMBER OTHER TOWNS ARE A CHEP BUSRIDE AWAY. ...
Advantages: Quiet resort, fantastic beaches, lovely old town with market Disadvantages: High kerbs are difficult for those with pushchairs
(although we only rarely met someone looking for payment). The beaches in May were very quiet and very safe for young children. The water is very shallow for a hundred yards or so, so they can paddle in safety. The highlight of the beach for me was the woman selling freshly cut melon, pineapple, etc - a nice touch on a hot day. Weather was warm enough for us, especially with 2 young children - low 20s most days, with a couple of days above 25. Alcudia has a very basic water park, but you'll need to travel to the south of the island for the better parks. The port area is lovely for a walk, with a wooden walkway and plenty of shops to explore along the boardwalk - its a relatively short walk from any part of Alcudia. We stayed at the DelfinAzul Hotel which was better than expected for a three star hotel. The hotel was clean and modern, although ...
