OLD GODS ARE STILL ALIVE IN THE NAVEL OF THE WORLD

Advantages: Rich, varied site with variety of ruins, an excellent museum and outstanding views
Disadvantages: Crowded, abundance of tour groups especially in the lower levels of the main site and the museum

Our visit to the Delphi site takes up good part of a Sunday, and we are many times lucky there. Firstly, the entrance is free on the day as it’s (unbeknown to us previously) an Environment Day. Secondly, and with more luck then design, we manage to stage our visit so that we avoid most of the tour groups as we visit the museum in the lunch hour and the sanctuary - normally the busiest part of the site – towards the closing time.

The road to Delphi from Itea and our campsite (Chrisso) winds up along tight serpentines, most of them close to 180 degrees. Eventually the coastal plain and the view of the bay disappears and we are surrounded by mountains from all sides. The site is located at the end of the modern village and consists, essentially, of three parts: the newly refurbished museum, the Sacred Precinct itself with the temple of Apollo, theatre and the stadium ... more

The oracle's prophesy is you will love Delphi

Advantages: Magnificent views, well preserved ancient city
Disadvantages: Spread over a large slopping area which can be tiring

...entrance. The city of Delphi lies approximately 3k away. We settled into our Hotel, The Casti. The hotel boasts of being “modern with all comforts sited in the quietest part of Delphi”. Well, the hotel has a distinctive look of the 1970s which in comparison to the ancient site. I suppose is modern. The rooms were small but reasonably comfortable, en-suite with a tiny shower cubicle but the crowning glory was a balcony from which there were magnificent ...
...was simply a meteorite. Delphi is most well known for its oracular powers. The art of prophecy was said to have been revealed to Apollo by Pan (the half goat-god of wild places and evocative music). Its reputation reached its height in around 7 BC. Women were considered more sensitive than men to the oracular powers of the site. In order to become more receptive, they would first bathe in the waters of the nearby sacred Castalian spring (said to ...

your quintessential greek tourist town

Advantages: If you only have time to visit a few heritage sites in Greece, this is one of the most famous, fullest and most representative.
Disadvantages: Having to hire an official guide, and the town itself isn't particularly 'happening'

...a much hyped Oracle at Delphi during ancient times that is mentioned in most textbooks and many ancient plays and poems. The Oracle was a priestess who was consulted on many important matters. The cryptic babbles she gave in reply were then interpreted and widely believed and followed, considered to be prophesies or advice. One of the modern explanations for the Oracle's words is that the priestess was merely high on something or other - hence the ...
...Walking around sites like Delphi is a worthwhile experience for anyone who has studied the classical world. It feels all the more real and is quite powerful to imagine people walking where you have walked, only thousands of years previously and wearing togas instead of lycra! Most of the site has been left as it was found, only tidied up a little. However they have 'rebuilt' one or two of the buildings from the stones found on the site, to give you ...

An overwhelming oracle

Advantages: It's culture, innit?!
Disadvantages: You must be sure of foot.

...are in the vicinity of Delphi on mainland Greece, you must go there! I'd read about this place at school, a place where characters from Greek mythology would go to consult the oracle - from my understanding, a rock on top of a hill. But the scale of the place is seriously overwhelming! Take with you your best walking attire, a huge bottle of water, and a camera, and trace your way up a mountain side that is absolutely crammed with ancient buildings ...

Delphi with Keytours tour guide

Advantages: Beautiful place with lots of history
Disadvantages: Bad tour guide equals bad experience

...my product ratings are for Delphi not Keytours We took a tour from Athens to Delphi and then onto Meteora. If your going to Delphi with a tour guide do some research on the company first because it can make a huge difference. Our tour guide was rude, impatient, always late and not very well informed. It put a rather large cloud over what should have been a brilliant experience. Think twice before booking with Keytours. Tour guide aside, Delphi ...
...about 2 hours from Athens, the view is stunning and the history of the place is absorbing to say the least. The town is small country affair. We didn't stay there so I can't tell you much other than it looks beautiful, several little restaurants/cafes and I'm told there is some shopping for souvenirs, jewelry and hand made crafts. In winter the entire town becomes a ski resort. The main attraction is without a doubt the ancient ruins. In ancient ...

Delphy and the oracle

Advantages: A must see
Disadvantages: the ony Disadvantage is if you dont visit it

...The first time i visited Delphi was 3 years ago. I rented a Car in Athens and hit the road. It is approximately 1.5h away and the landscape is great. On your way you will pass Arahova village whitch is a must stop. Delphi I would suggest you to take a bottle of water and a snack with you. don't rush go first in the museum to see what they found out, so it will be easer for you to imagine what was standing once upon a time there. While in the ...

Hotel Amalia Delphi - Ok for a night

Advantages: Good location which is next to Delphi town
Disadvantages: Mostly for bus tours

I stayed here for a night while I was travelling on the Kalambaka-Delphi-Olympia route. I have also stayed in Hotel Amalia Kalambaka and Hotel Amalia Olympia. Hotel Amalia Delphi belongs to the Amalia Group of hotels in Greece and their main target is bus tour groups. Places like Kalambaka, Delphi and Olympia do not have convenient public transport serving them thus tourists most likely have to join bus tours. Delphi is a small town which can be easily covered by foot. The historical site of Delphi is also easily accessible from Hotel Amalia Delphi. The hotel is rated as 4-star but mostly likely because of the swimming pool. Bus tours stay here as the small towns do not have other hotels which have over 100 rooms. Hotel Amalia Delphi is situated on a slope and overlooks the Corinthian Gulf. The nicest view from the hotel ...

Review of Amalia Hotel, Delphi

Greece - the cultural capital of Europe

Advantages: Everything - Great food, people, sites, views and transport
Disadvantages: No cheaper than England

I've recently completed an Ancient History degree and as part of this course we had to spend a fortnight in a foreign country researching an aspect of our course. Immediately, me and a few friends chose Greece, hoping for a great experience. Our focus was Greek mythology in the built environment (ie-how myth was shown on buildings). The two weeks spent here saw us travelling across the country on a hectic schedule, absorbing the culture and spending time walking around the numerous well-preserved ruins Our itinerary saw us visiting Athens, Corinth, Olympia, Delphi, Tiryns, Mycenae and Eleusis. This review concerns Greece in general however, so I will not focus much on specifics. One of the first things you notice about Greece is how beautiful it is. Olympia and Delphi in particular had lush green landscapes and heart ...

CAMPING NEAR THE NAVEL OF THE WOLRD

Advantages: breathtaking views, excellent facilities (new bathrooms, pool), nicely landscaped
Disadvantages: on an expensive side (not for Delphi though); lack of proper tenting turf

We spend several weeks in May and June 2005 camping in Greece, mainly in Peloponessus, but we also strayed onto the mainland to visit the shrine of Delphi and stayed in a campsite I am now reviewing. *Location* There are actually three campsites in the immediate vicinity of Delphi, all of them located on the Delphi-Itea road and all easily accessible both by car and bus: this one is the furthest (7 km), located on the border of village of Krisso, which actually in the ancient times ruled Delphi sacred perceint and only after a series of 'Sacred Wars' its hegemony has been overruled. But enough history. *Environment* Camping Chrissa is generally more of a caravan/camper place: gravelled areas dominate and there is virtually no proper tenting turf, apart from a few patches near the swimming pool or close to a steep hillside ...
