The Design Museum (London)

Advantages: Good collection
Disadvantages: Admission expensive

The Design Museum is situated just a few hundred yards from Tower Bridge. I last visited about a year ago so there may have been a few changes since then. The Design museum is a repository for what are considered to be the best , or at least iconic pieces, of twentieth century product design. This includes furniture, tables, chairs, lighting and all manner of interior furnishings.

The collection though mostly covering the modernist ...
.../> When I was studying design at College, I was told that the acid test for any designer is the chair. This is because it poses nearly all the problems a designer can face in one object. There are the problems of ergonomics, this is how the design interacts with the human body, size and shape, how comfortable it is. There is aesthetics, how the piece will look, what are the design agendas and ethos, social and political values, behind the visual ... more

Design Museum London

Advantages: Your visit will be brief
Disadvantages: You will be fleeced out of too much money

...Our original plan was the Design Exhibition at Earls Court, but that was trade only on Saturday so this seemed a reasonable alternative. Oh dear is my major comment, who they were aiming for remains a mystery but my overwhelming opinion upon leaving this venue was that I had been ripped off. £6 each for adults and £4 for a 7 year old were steep prices by amyones margin. What is there you may ask? On the first level of exhibits was work by Bass ...
...designs of coat hangers, a design of eating utensils all odd pieces lovingly made so they look as if they are from the same set. Most of it was pure unadulterated trash. Pupils at my school design better for their GCSE projects. If you want to see good design projects it convinced me that school children have more imagination, more flair and alot of them have a load more taste. As you can tell, I was disappointed, I've been coming to London regularly ...

Real hidden treasure

Advantages: Interesting and friendly
Disadvantages: Not easy to find

Sir John Sloane's Museum is a real hidden treasure in London's Lincoln's Inn Fields. Mr Sloan was an architect and avid collector who designed the Bank of England amongst other things. After his death in the 1830's his house full of mummies, Greek statues, paintings was preserved perfectly. If you want to know how an educated and inspired man lived 150 years ago, this is the perfect place. It is quite small and easy to see in a few hours. Entry is free and the staff are very helpful. Make sure not to miss the picture collection. ...

Review of Sir John Soane´s Museum (London)

My favourite museum in London

Advantages: learning was never so much fun - free entrance - amazing museum
Disadvantages: could be crowded... that's all

Natural History Museum of London is perhaps one of my favourite museums in the World. Whenever I'm in London I try to visit it. The museum is in a "cathedral" building. This creation was deliberately designed by Alfred Waterhouse to inspire awe... and it does. It's even hard to photograph because it's very big compared to the surrounding area. The elaborate Romanesque style is impressive as the giant cast of Diplodocus skeleton in the main hall of the Life Galleries. This museum makes learning fun! They have amazing galleries and a vast collection (70 million plants, animals, fossils, rocks and minerals to be exact) including dinosaurs (also a real-size animatronic Tyrannosaurus Rex roaring at you) and Creepy Crawlies gallery. Also impressive is a giant tree slice on top of the stairs in the hall which dates from 557 to 1892 when ...

Weston Park, Sheffield

Advantages: Easily Accessible
Disadvantages: Quite Small

Malton, North Yorkshire in 1824 and moved to Sheffield when he was in his teens. He got a job as an engraver at the Sheffield School of Art and one of his earliest works was a study of the local Craftsmen. In 1859 he moved to London where he supervised the decorative design of the Royal Albert and Victoria Museum. This Memorial was designed by one of Godfrey's pupils, James Gamble and it depicts Sykes through three different stages of his life, Youth, Maturity and Old Age. Godfrey Sykes died in London in 1865. THE VICTORIAN BANDSTAND This is the only surviving example of a Victorian Bandstand in a Sheffield Park. It was designed in 1875 by the Sheffield Architects Flockton & Gibbs but it was not built until around 20 years later. This Bandstand was originally one of a pair, the other one being in Hillsborough Park ...
