Deutsche Bahn (formerly Deutsche Bundesbahn)(Germany)

... Somehow, the whole vision took place in black and white and amidst steam and whistles (think The Lady Vanishes, The 39 Steps or Brief Encounter) Could the reality ever live up to my ideal? City Night Line from Deutsche Bahn

Advantages: Clean, private, good breakfast, take your time to travel
Disadvantages: No dining car on our train, not easy for the less mobile

...is a service operated by Deutsche Bahn that runs through Europe, connecting cities in France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, Czech Republic and Italy.

The service operates specially designed trains incorporating couchettes and sleeper cabins as well as seats and (apparently) cushioned axles for a smooth ride, and therefore a good night's sleep.

Why Did We Choose the City Night Line?
...to do, we contacted the Deutsche Bahn call centre in London. You can go on their website (www.bahn.co.uk) for timetables, availability information, pricing and you can purchase your tickets in this way. The website is pretty well laid out, but we didn't use it because we needed to get our discounts, which had to be done over the phone.

We made several calls to the call centre because we were booking very early and the different legs ... more

Advantages: Clean, cheap, fast and efficient

...transport, and the trains of Deutsche Bahn (the German railway network) in particular, to get around on my travels. While there have been some dodgy moments, I can say that the service offered to rail passengers in Germany beats anything on offer in Britain into a cocked hat, even if the locals here do like to moan and whinge if a train is a couple of minutes late! The opinions I have read on train travel in the UK, coupled with my own frustrating ...
...between, say, Thames Trains and Deutsche Bahn. I’ll start off by detailing the different types of trains and services provided by the German railway network. The slowest and most basic trains you will come across (and the ones I use the most frequently) are RE (Regionalbahn) and SE (Stadtexpress, meaning ‘town express’, which is misnomer if ever I’ve heard one!) – these stop at all or most of the smaller stations on ...

Why can't be have railways like this in the UK

Advantages: Well informed, on time trains, cheap tickets
Disadvantages: None really :-)

I have been to Germany 2 times, and have used the trains there 3 times. And i am thoroughly impressed as are most people across the Uk, in comparison to trains here. The fact that when you plan a journey through Die Bahn's website and it displays train times, fares and even (and prepare to be amazed!) the platform you arrive/depart from! If you check out Die Bahn's site too, you can also find out international train information. I once plotted a ...
...i have friends. It told me all the trains, and the information was accurate! The trains are second to none! Intercity trains are comfortable, and the new generation of trains which use Neigetechnik (tilting technology) are able to travel faster and reduce times. Old-style ICE trains still travel fast and connect major cities in short periods of time. Investment continues with upgrades to lines, new lines emerging and faster trains. Inside, the ...

Could have been better.

Advantages: Not a miracle but nice
Disadvantages: Is not what it is told to be.

Destination : Hamburg - Berlin Train : The ICE Sales : -------- Counters are overwhelmed by lines of hundreds of passengers. Some give up and go to the kiosks. Well this guy had to wait since I needed help. Young gent at the counter very helpful, polite, actually having a great time helping a foreigner who has an awful American yankee accent (that is me...) The car was clean and tidy. The conductor was polite and eager to do his job. However, when the train took off, the maximum speed I saw on the digital screen was no where higher than 150 km/h. So it is no speed train. It kept on braking and slowing down eventhough ...
