This is an old pictoresque town in the east of the Netherlands, located on the banks of the river IJssel and easily accessible both by car and railway. It's origin dates back to about 600 AD when the area was christenised by Bishop Lebuinus. Because he came from England there are rumours that the name Deventer is derived from Daventry. In the Middle Ages the town was an important member of the Hanseatic League, the economic European Union of that time. Apart from the Grote Kerk (Big Church) near the townhall there is the Bergkerk area with its old cobblestone streets and restored houses. Enjoy the many antique shops in that area! The whole of Deventer is worth a daylong stroll. There is much to be seen! Don't forget to take the ferry across the river to the Worp (the Throw). From there you have a great view of the city. On the Grote Markt is the Waag, the historical museum of the city. Another museum worth visiting is the Toy museum next to the Waag. After all the walking it is good to sit down on one of the many terraces lining the central square and sample a bite of the original Deventer Koek (mildly spiced cake). There are a couple of very good restaurants in Deventer. Oh, and have a look at the bridge crossing the river: this is the place where the movie 'A Bridge Too Far' was shot!
