Many places have had books named after them, but Westward Ho! is the only place to have been named after a book.
"Westward Ho! is an 1855 British historical novel by Charles Kingsley, inspired in part by the Crimean War." it is also where the famous author Charles Kingsley lived, it is a Victorian town with a long beach and pebble ridge stretching to the mouth of the Taw Torridge estuary.
Well to me Westward Ho! is just lovely, perfect for a family holiday, It is situated just a mile and a half from Bideford in North Devon EX39. From London it is just 4hrs, M4 to Bristol then M5 south bound to junction 27,then follow the A361 all the way to the A39 (40 miles or so) then its just 9 miles to Westward Ho!
My Dad has has lived there in this mostly quiet town for eight years, the air is clear (I have asthma and didnt once need my inhaler during our seven day stay) and the views are spectacular. The people are friendly, always aknowledging you.. you are made to feel very welcome.
To keep you occupied whilst there, you can enjoy excellent walks along the coast towards the Northam Burrows Country Park and the Royal North Devon Golf Course. Minature golf, Hockings Ice Cream Vans (the tastiest ice cream I have ever tasted). Shopping in the small parades of shops, mostly tourist orientated as this is a very busy tourist town during the high season, a surf shop, Co-Op, restaurants such as Country Cousins, a Fish & Chip shop (can't remember the name)and a few pubs that serve food and smaller cafe's where you can buy burgers, fish n chips, pizza etc.. you will not starve in Westward Ho!
The beach is something else, only visible at low tide... smooth sand, rock pools full of sea creatures, the sea of course and the pebble ridge which is pretty hard to walk on but great fun..
Nearest towns to visit are Abbotsham (1.82 miles) Bideford (1.88 miles) Appledore (2.09 miles).. and its only eight and a half miles to Barnstaple for main shopping centres alike most larger towns in UK..
For children there are some great attractions close by such as The Big Sheep ..just a few miles in the car http://www.thebigsheep.co.uk/ entrance pricing - Children = £8.95 Adults = £8.95
Another great place to visit is The Milky Way Adventure Park, about a 20 minute drive from Westward Ho! http://www.themilkyway.co.uk/ entrance pricing - £10 adults £9 children. under three's go FREE..
We stayed at Surf Bay Holiday Park, in a 5/6 berth caravan in july costing £350 for the week http://www.surfbayholidays.co.uk/surfbay.asp a cheap and fun way to stay in Westward Ho! a five minute walk to the beach over the northam burrows and pebble ridge, the burrows is home to sheep and horses and you are free to walk accross it with the animals roaming free and happily among you..
