We had a 3 night weekend break at this site last month, and I wish to warn anyone tempted to book a holiday there - the accomodation is just the pits and it really does spoil what should be a relaxing stay in a beautiful part of the country.
On the positive - The site overlooks St Mary's Bay, which is beautiful. The entertainment laid on, like bowling and a night club, looks reasonable. The staff at reception are friendly. There is a pub, which serves a good variety of drinks and food, which looks eatable but relies very heavily on pork/bacon, so we didn't sample it.
On the negative - apart from the chalets - the take away was expensive and staffed by very disinterested youngsters, and the resulting food was tastless and poor value. The shop is scruffy and very very hot in warm weather, so I am sure the 'fresh' food soon isn't.
It is the chalets that beggar belief. They are in long rows and make Hi De Hi look sophisticated. We booked the 'gold' (ha ha) class, i.e. the most expensive of three categories. We paid £399 for three nights - not cheap by any means, and were appalled. The only cleaning that had been done was the floors, which had been vacuumed quickly, and certainly not with any care to go along the edges and in the corners, and the kitchen counter and tables had been wiped off. That's it. There was thick dust in the lampshades and inside the crumbling wardrobes, the bathroom floor was sickening and when I tried to wipe it, it was black with the accumulated dirt of years, it had never been mopped. There were cobwebs over all the windows and long black hairs all over the ancient blue bath, which had obviously not been touched since the last people left. The blankets were unpleasant and ancient and smelt strange, as did the sofa. The patio window, which should have given a lovely view of the Bay was covered in greasy hand prints of, no doubt, months of children who had stayed there, goodness knows when a bit of Windowlene had touched that glass.
It was horrible, and, for us, expensive. Beware too of the very steep concrete paths down from the car park, along which you have to haul your trolley. There are slippy manhole covers set into the paths, often right on the steepest parts - I slipped and damaged my knee on one - it was raining, the path ran steeply downhill and the metal was as slippy as ice.
I wrote to Riviera but have not had the courtesy of a reply, so all I can do it to warn others. Don't go there.
