I could murder a good breakfast!
Advantages: Good quality, pleasant helpful staff. Disadvantages: A walk to the centre
We were only going away for a couple of days but for some reason, known only to him, my husband decided that he had very particular requirements as to where we were going to stay and what he expected from the hotel. I managed to book a discounted room at the Grand Hotel in Torquay which seemed to match my husband's requirements for an easy walk to the beach and "a proper breakfast".
We arrived at the hotel and although the car parking spaces were ... ...staff were especially polite and helpful. The hotel, true to its name, was very grand, an imposing site set on the sea front in Torbay, but quite a way from the main town of Torquay, about 10 mins or thereabouts (but we are both quite fit and quick walkers). We actually found the location ideal as it meant the hotel was quite quiet at night.
Our room was a good size and had a view of the sea from a side window. I found the decor in our room a bit ...

What a disappointment
Advantages: location Disadvantages: small dingy room, expensive
...had been spoilt, but the Thurlestone was more expensive and we anticipated some degree of luxury.
We were brought to a tiny room with a microscopic window over looking the hotel car park, the fabrics were OK but cheap and a bit tacky and the size was really that of a small single hotel room at the rear of a hotel, we felt like bad children who had been consigned to the worst room in the place for some undefined misdemeanour.
My wife cried!
The ... ...included in the price!
Thurlestone is gorgeous but why travel all that way to be incarcerated in a prison cell at the rear of the hotel, very disappointing.
The facilities looked clean and good and there was nice grounds to stroll through and we met a lovely man with a beautiful long haired dachshund. I feel that this hotel's main asset is the location but in trying to maximise their profit they have forgotten one thing......the customer! Please ...

A good night to all.
Advantages: In city centre, large comfortable rooms good breakfast Disadvantages: poor parking, small towels!
I stayed for one night with my wife when attending a friend's wedding which was held here. we had a special wedding price of £85 inc. breakfast which was very reasonable when you consider the normal price is £160!.
We booked over the phone and the staff were very helpful, confirmation arrived in the post a couple of days later including directions and facilities, this is when we learnt of the parking. There are 30 spaces at the hotel at a cost of ... ...they go quite quickly. If you don't get a space there a map showing other available car parks close by is shown, although the prices aren't given.
Check in is after 2 pm and we arrived at 3 the staff were very friendly and although it was very busy they were very attentive to detail. My credit card was pre-authorised for £30 more than the cost of the room and we took a lift to the 1st floor room.
The room was fairly large and well set out with ...

Disappearing in Luxury
Advantages: Glorious Gormet Food and Cozy Comfortable Rooms. Disadvantages: Rather hard to find.
...a one night stay at Northcote Manor for my birthday three years ago and I still have fond memories of our stay. It was a rather unplanned break and having fleetingly looked up some random hotels in Devon and Cornwall before leaving; this one stuck in my memory remembering the beautiful images on their website, of the hotel and its location.
It was quite difficult to find in its out of the way location and the mile or so climb up the private drive ... ...been recently serviced. It was very secluded and beautiful in its woodland surroundings, but might give some the heebeegeebees at being so isolated.
I am quite shocked to discover that the hotel only receives three stars as it appeared to be a huge leap above the two stars we had been popping into for a night's stay on the rest of our long weekend tour. As it was unplanned the greeting we received looking rather dishevelled in our old Fiesta wasn't ...

Southgate Hotel Exeter, home from home
Advantages: Within short walking distance of centre, friendly staff, pleasant atmosphere Disadvantages: Bar pricey and lounge area needs refurbished
I have had the pleasure of staying at this hotel for an extended period last year.
Whilst the hotel is due for major refurbishment, the only area this showed was the lounge bar area (flooring). The lounge is comfortable, fabulous large comfy settees, the staff are amazing and cant do enough for you.
Drinks tend to be pricey and the bar menu is limited, although the restaurant serves a lovely evening meal and breakfasts to die for. The continental ... ...of full breakfast, which is normally very good, though during the week can be a bit slow dependent on your choice of breakfast time.
The hotel seems to cater mostly for business people during the week , weekends, older couples and wedding parties.
The rooms are a good size and all have ensuite (they even have volume controls so you can listen to the TV or radio in the bath!!) Good selection of "smellies" in the bathroom too, with clean fresh towels ...
