Great hotel - but . . .

Advantages: Friendly service and excellent restaurant
Disadvantages: Poor room cleaning

We stayed at this hotel in September 2006. It is in a good location, about 5 minutes walk from the shopping centre and a few more minutes to cathedral freen. It is opposite a small car park where overnight parking was free with a ticket from the hotel but there is a charge during the daytime. What a lovely warm and friendly welcome we received - a beaming smile and greeting as we walked through the door. They responded quickly to any request, for ...
...room and a replacement appeared immediately. The restaurant serves excellent food and the Set Menu is amazing value. No wonder it was full on the Friday night. Breakfast was also excellent with a good selection of home made items, surprisingly extensive for the size of hotel. The rooms are nicely decorated and comfortable. There are tea and coffee making facilities, a small television and a radio. Plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. The bathroom ...

Home Farm Hotel, Wilmington

Advantages: Pretty village
Disadvantages: Poor value for money

Overall a disappointing stay, and poor value for money. Despite having booked in 3 months in advance, on arrival we were told that we had no reservation. It was only on production of email confirmation of our booking that a room was "found" for us. The room was disappointing: very cramped, musty, light did not work (bulb was missing and not replaced despite request), and the bathroom had seen better days. Although it was advertised as having a shower, ...
...and nowhere for the shower head to attach to. Breakfast was chaotic, with only one person waiting on the tables. My scrambled eggs turned up without toast - I had to ask for that and it took another 5 minutes. Then I had to ask for butter, which took another few minutes - by which time the rest of my table had finished their cooked breakfasts, get the picture? I do not feel it was worth almost £90 per night for the standard of service and accomodation ...

Coombe cross Hotel - a trip into the 1970's

Advantages: Close to some points of interest
Disadvantages: Not geared up for younger families

...listening monitors and family friendliness. Coombe cross failed us personally on all counts. When we arrived there was no cot despite this being outlined as a prerequisite, even after phoning ahead mid-journey to double check it was ready for our sleeping 1 year old the sole cot on the premises was in use, so my daughter waitied in the car, at 10pm, until one arrived. At breakfast we were hastily informed that for mealtimes they only had one high-chair ...
...of being there first - so fingers crossed we didnt want to eat at the same times!! As for the monitor they advertise as having available so that parents can have a relaxing meal in the restaurant - they didn't exist as we requested the use of this "facility"...so rather than a relaxing romantic dinner for 2, I went out for take-away pizza which we ate in the room, quietly and in darkeness, so as not to disturb the sleeping kids From our perspetive ...

The Hoops Inn

Advantages: Nice part of the country
Disadvantages: Not worth the money

...only 10 months old. The Hoops Inn, which we found in the Good Pub Guide, seemed to offer what we parents wanted. When I rang to enquire I specifically asked for a family room and clearly stated that we needed a quiet room. I was told that Room 4 was suitable for us. The Location and Buildings: Hoops is located on the A39 main road between Bideford and Bude. It is about 5 miles from the tourist trap of Clovelly and about 20 miles from the surfing ...
...and Mum carried our son! Hoops also have large areas of gardens at the rear but the weather wasn't favourable enough for us to explore them so I can't really comment on them. Reception and arrival: You enter the hotel at the rear of the old building and through a section of the newer annexe. The reception desk is located near the main bar where our first impression was of a nice looking olde worlde pub/restaurant. Unfortunately our second impression ...

A shabby hotel in need of updating

Advantages: Easy to find, plenty of parking
Disadvantages: A steep walk back from the town, much of the decor and facilities in desperate need of an upgrade

This hotel is well located and easy to find, but it is a steep hill's wall away from the town of Torquay and the harbour. However there is a bus which comes up the hill fairly frequently and stops by the hotel. When we arrived at the hotel we were kept waiting for several minutes whilst the hotelier was on the telephone talking to another potential guest. He didnt acknowledge us at all and never apologised for keeping us waiting. He showed me to ...
...The floor of the en-suite bathroom was covered in some grubby stuff which looked like stuck down flooring had been taken up and the adhesive not properly removed. The room was barely big enough for a large single, but two single beds were squashed in with very little space between them. The bed spreads were past thier best and one of them had a large yellow stain on it. There was a great flat screen TV in the room, but the reception quality wasnt ...
