a small friendly hotel with personal touch
Advantages: Very close to the Town Centre and Harbour Disadvantages: Nothing to dislike
We stayed in the Palms Hotel from 11 September 2007 for three nights. We stayed in the four poster room. Our proprieters were really pleasant helful people. We have decided that we will be returning at a later date.
Our room was really nice and the service was marvellous. Whatever the needs or requirements were our hosts were happy to oblige. On one of our nights we were unsure where to eat so they suggested a few places one of which we chose. It ... ...people with children and a bar on request. Torquay was a fabulous place to visit made better by our hosts. The hotel was small but beautiful. Just a short walk away from the harbour and the main town area.
Our thanks go to our hosts. Like we say we will be returning at a later date probably for longer. ...

Sampsons
Advantages: Friendly, excellent service, comfortable and good location Disadvantages: None!
...our very enjoyable stay at Sampsons Farn Country Hotel. We loved the setting - wonderful walks and great locaion. The room was very comfortable and the staff extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. We had a fantastic meal one evening in the restaurant - compliments to the chef. We have only ever seen food prepared that looked anything like we had the pleasure of eating, and that was on TV but to eat it as well was something ...

camping in a civilised manner
Advantages: on the edge of Dartmoor national park, bar always open for good food and drinks Disadvantages: none in my view
...not actually slept in the Fox and Hounds but I’ve spent plenty of time sleeping in their garden and I’d best explain that comment quickly before you imagine im so drunk I cant get home !
The Fox and Hounds has Dartmoor national park right behind it. In a field behind the hotel they allow camping in tents, caravans and motor homes. I’ve spent a fair bit of time eating and drinking inside though. This is a really nice place and it was a hard decision ... ...why I am sure the Fox and Hounds never gets as full as it should.
Me … I like it and I’m going to tell you why:
The large campsite has direct access to the moor behind it .camp site here http://www.foxandhoundshotel.com/images/camping2.jpg
When I go to Dartmoor I go to walk, eat and drink, except the order really goes walk-eat-drink-sleep-?-eat-walk-eat-sleep and repeat. You can eat what you like if you intend to walk and Dartmoor is the place ...

Great hotel - but . . .
Advantages: Friendly service and excellent restaurant Disadvantages: Poor room cleaning
We stayed at this hotel in September 2006. It is in a good location, about 5 minutes walk from the shopping centre and a few more minutes to cathedral freen. It is opposite a small car park where overnight parking was free with a ticket from the hotel but there is a charge during the daytime.
What a lovely warm and friendly welcome we received - a beaming smile and greeting as we walked through the door. They responded quickly to any request, for ... ...room and a replacement appeared immediately.
The restaurant serves excellent food and the Set Menu is amazing value. No wonder it was full on the Friday night. Breakfast was also excellent with a good selection of home made items, surprisingly extensive for the size of hotel.
The rooms are nicely decorated and comfortable. There are tea and coffee making facilities, a small television and a radio. Plenty of wardrobe and drawer space. The bathroom ...

Home Farm Hotel, Wilmington
Advantages: Pretty village Disadvantages: Poor value for money
Overall a disappointing stay, and poor value for money. Despite having booked in 3 months in advance, on arrival we were told that we had no reservation. It was only on production of email confirmation of our booking that a room was "found" for us.
The room was disappointing: very cramped, musty, light did not work (bulb was missing and not replaced despite request), and the bathroom had seen better days. Although it was advertised as having a shower, ... ...and nowhere for the shower head to attach to.
Breakfast was chaotic, with only one person waiting on the tables. My scrambled eggs turned up without toast - I had to ask for that and it took another 5 minutes. Then I had to ask for butter, which took another few minutes - by which time the rest of my table had finished their cooked breakfasts, get the picture?
I do not feel it was worth almost £90 per night for the standard of service and accomodation ...
