a small friendly hotel with personal touch
Advantages: Very close to the Town Centre and Harbour Disadvantages: Nothing to dislike
We stayed in the Palms Hotel from 11 September 2007 for three nights. We stayed in the four poster room. Our proprieters were really pleasant helful people. We have decided that we will be returning at a later date.
Our room was really nice and the service was marvellous. Whatever the needs or requirements were our hosts were happy to oblige. On one of our nights we were unsure where to eat so they suggested a few places one of which we chose. It ... ...people with children and a bar on request. Torquay was a fabulous place to visit made better by our hosts. The hotel was small but beautiful. Just a short walk away from the harbour and the main town area.
Our thanks go to our hosts. Like we say we will be returning at a later date probably for longer. ...

camping in a civilised manner
Advantages: on the edge of Dartmoor national park, bar always open for good food and drinks Disadvantages: none in my view
...not actually slept in the Fox and Hounds but I’ve spent plenty of time sleeping in their garden and I’d best explain that comment quickly before you imagine im so drunk I cant get home !
The Fox and Hounds has Dartmoor national park right behind it. In a field behind the hotel they allow camping in tents, caravans and motor homes. I’ve spent a fair bit of time eating and drinking inside though. This is a really nice place and it was a hard decision ... ...why I am sure the Fox and Hounds never gets as full as it should.
Me … I like it and I’m going to tell you why:
The large campsite has direct access to the moor behind it .camp site here http://www.foxandhoundshotel.com/images/camping2.jpg
When I go to Dartmoor I go to walk, eat and drink, except the order really goes walk-eat-drink-sleep-?-eat-walk-eat-sleep and repeat. You can eat what you like if you intend to walk and Dartmoor is the place ...

Home Farm Hotel, Wilmington
Advantages: Pretty village Disadvantages: Poor value for money
Overall a disappointing stay, and poor value for money. Despite having booked in 3 months in advance, on arrival we were told that we had no reservation. It was only on production of email confirmation of our booking that a room was "found" for us.
The room was disappointing: very cramped, musty, light did not work (bulb was missing and not replaced despite request), and the bathroom had seen better days. Although it was advertised as having a shower, ... ...and nowhere for the shower head to attach to.
Breakfast was chaotic, with only one person waiting on the tables. My scrambled eggs turned up without toast - I had to ask for that and it took another 5 minutes. Then I had to ask for butter, which took another few minutes - by which time the rest of my table had finished their cooked breakfasts, get the picture?
I do not feel it was worth almost £90 per night for the standard of service and accomodation ...

Local, cheap and convenient
Advantages: Cheap, cosy and friendly family run hotel. Disadvantages: Views and parking limited
I must say that this hotel was a bargain and well worth it!
I found this hotel by looking on www.laterooms.com (this website is great!). All other hotels in Plymouth were either too expensive or too far away from the city centre of Plymouth. This hotel cost just £47.50 a night for a double room which included breakfast and private bathroom. The parking was quite difficult to park in but easy to find. You have to access it via a back lane, however ... ...spaces for about 5/6 cars and a few more spaces on the lane itself. This parking was reasonably secure. The hotel is quite easy to find as long as you have some sort of map in front of you. Its on a main road andits bright blue colour stands out from the rest of the street.
The location of this hotel is actually only a 5 minute walk from town and the train station. There is a bit of a hill but nothing too harsh. There is a bus stop just a few yards ...

Disappearing in Luxury
Advantages: Glorious Gormet Food and Cozy Comfortable Rooms. Disadvantages: Rather hard to find.
...a one night stay at Northcote Manor for my birthday three years ago and I still have fond memories of our stay. It was a rather unplanned break and having fleetingly looked up some random hotels in Devon and Cornwall before leaving; this one stuck in my memory remembering the beautiful images on their website, of the hotel and its location.
It was quite difficult to find in its out of the way location and the mile or so climb up the private drive ... ...been recently serviced. It was very secluded and beautiful in its woodland surroundings, but might give some the heebeegeebees at being so isolated.
I am quite shocked to discover that the hotel only receives three stars as it appeared to be a huge leap above the two stars we had been popping into for a night's stay on the rest of our long weekend tour. As it was unplanned the greeting we received looking rather dishevelled in our old Fiesta wasn't ...
