One Night Stay September 2006

Advantages: Fabulous funky decor and ambience
Disadvantages: Car parking can be tricky

The Hotel Barcelona in Exeter is part of the Alias chain of hotels (there are others in Cheltenham and Brighton I believe) and was described as "one of the Hippest Hotels in Britain" by Lonely Planet in 2005. We booked the hotel online on a complete whim about an hour before we checked in. We only live about six miles from the hotel, but the cost of the room was hardly much more than a taxi into Exeter and back for the evening. That's how we justified ...
...snapped it up. The hotel itself has been very well described by the reviewer above, so I will just add my thoughts rather than repeating any of the information above! The location of the hotel in Exeter is an easy level ten minute (maximum) walk into the High Street area. The new Princesshay development with many dining opportunities is only about 7 minutes' walk from the Barcelona. It is also well situated for the Quay area with nightclubs and ...

Plymouth Copthore Hotel

Advantages: Great Location
Disadvantages: More of a Good 3* Hotel than a 4* Hotel.

...mixed views on the Plymouth Copthorne Hotel. I have stayed here numerous times, and have experienced a variety of services from "average" to "good". Official details about the hotel (and booking rates) can be found here: http://www.benbow.org.uk/CopthornePlymouth.htm First of all, I have never had a "bad" experience in the Copthorne. There have been times where an issue arose, but this was then sorted out by the front desk staff. Saying that, the ...
...so the rate at the Copthorne isn't that bad. It is located at the top end of the town. This means it is great to explore Plymouth - the shopping is on your doorstep, and Plymouth Hoe and Barbican are about a 10 minute walk away. It is also away from the bars/pubs that are at the lower end of town, so noise disturbance is surprisingly low for a town center hotel. When you check out, you are more than welcome to leave bags at reception for the rest ...

camping in a civilised manner

Advantages: on the edge of Dartmoor national park, bar always open for good food and drinks
Disadvantages: none in my view

...not actually slept in the Fox and Hounds but I’ve spent plenty of time sleeping in their garden and I’d best explain that comment quickly before you imagine im so drunk I cant get home ! The Fox and Hounds has Dartmoor national park right behind it. In a field behind the hotel they allow camping in tents, caravans and motor homes. I’ve spent a fair bit of time eating and drinking inside though. This is a really nice place and it was a hard decision ...
...why I am sure the Fox and Hounds never gets as full as it should. Me … I like it and I’m going to tell you why: The large campsite has direct access to the moor behind it .camp site here http://www.foxandhoundshotel.com/images/camping2.jpg When I go to Dartmoor I go to walk, eat and drink, except the order really goes walk-eat-drink-sleep-?-eat-walk-eat-sleep and repeat. You can eat what you like if you intend to walk and Dartmoor is the place ...

A Horrible little Hotel in Plymouth

Advantages: Position - within 5 minutes of the station and 10 mins from town.
Disadvantages: The Hotel and Staff are awful.

Absolutely appalling little hotel. The hotel itself was dirty (carpets etc.), our shower didn't work and we were told we had missed breakfast by one minute (even though our watches said their clock was fast). No options - just "breakfast is finished". When I suggested her clock was fast, she marched over to the TV and switched it on with Teletext showing the time (which was now after 9am) and marched off without a word! The Staff/owners were curt ...

The Hoops Inn

Advantages: Nice part of the country
Disadvantages: Not worth the money

...only 10 months old. The Hoops Inn, which we found in the Good Pub Guide, seemed to offer what we parents wanted. When I rang to enquire I specifically asked for a family room and clearly stated that we needed a quiet room. I was told that Room 4 was suitable for us. The Location and Buildings: Hoops is located on the A39 main road between Bideford and Bude. It is about 5 miles from the tourist trap of Clovelly and about 20 miles from the surfing ...
...and Mum carried our son! Hoops also have large areas of gardens at the rear but the weather wasn't favourable enough for us to explore them so I can't really comment on them. Reception and arrival: You enter the hotel at the rear of the old building and through a section of the newer annexe. The reception desk is located near the main bar where our first impression was of a nice looking olde worlde pub/restaurant. Unfortunately our second impression ...
