Work on the Burj Al Arab began in 1994 and finished in 1999. The hotel was built to resemble the sail of a dhow, which is a type of Arabian vessel. The Crown Prince of Dubai wanted the Burj Al Arab to be iconic, in the same way the Eiffel Tower is iconic in Paris. He wanted people to think of Dubai whenever the name BURJ AL ARAB was mentioned. The hotel cost a total of $650 million dollars to build and the task was completed by a UK based company.

for the day, and the driver took us into Dubai city to shop. This added about an hour to our journey but we had no complaints from anyone, just sympathy. It was quite cool shopping by chauffeured Rolls.
As you approach the hotel you can't fail to spot the impressive towering hotel against the blue sky of Dubai. It's designed to look like the sail of an Arabian Dhow (a sailing ship) stretched against the breeze, the building is slightly higher than the Eiffel tower and one whole side of the building is a canvas like material enhancing the sail metaphor. You really need to see the building in photographs. I find it a beautiful sight.

We stayed at this hotel in London a little over a month ago now for two nights, we chose this hotel mainly because of the central location and because it was only a ten minuite walk from the show we had booked to go too.
Check in was very quick - About ten minuites and the staff at the reception seemed very friendly.
My first thoughts on the hotel was that it looked really clean and that it was nicely decorated and it looked modern.
I was a little dissapointed with our room as it was very small and basic, our room had a double bed, tea and coffee making facilities, a tv with satellite and a small, basic en suite bathroom with a shower.
The views from our room very very poor - A block of offices which made our room dark as they were so close.
The hotel has two bars and two resturaunts, the bars were again nicely decorated ...
