I fell it is time to add to the Glasgow Restaurant section, are there no Glasgow Ciao members?

Di Maggios is a Glasgow based chain of mid market, mid priced restaurants. The restaurant I have visited was in the West End of Glasgow, Just off Byres Road on Ruthven Lane. It is not very well signposted from the road and on your first visit you feel that you are going round the back of someones house to get there, down cobbled lanes. I wouldn't advise single females to venture on their own or with your best stilletoes either.

The restaurant was busy on a Friday night at about 8pm and the crowd was a real mixture, some couples, girls nights out, leaving parties etc. The room is very dark and lit with candles, to be honest I did not notice any other decoration as it was dark but the tables were very close together.

We were on a birthday celebration and our main aim was to ensure that we had some food to line our stomachs before the night of partying ahead, not the most glamourous reason I know but we had found the ideal place.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. We were a group of 10 girls and as you can imagine it took some time to get everyone seated, there was one late arrival, it took forever to take an order but still they smiled and joked with us.

But, I hear you ask what about the food, well in a restaurant like this the food is almost second to the atmosphere. The restaurant theme, if you can call it that, is Italian but it is fairly standard fare pizzas, pasta, garlic bread etc. Prices are reasonable with starters around the 4GBP mark and include favourites such as chicken wings, garlic bread, mushrooms, pate etc. We had a few platters which had a selection of wings, ribs mushrooms etc and were good for sharing and picking at if you want to try everything.

There is a large selection of main courses including various Pizzas, Pastas and fish dishes. The Mussels are meant to be very good however they had sold out on the night we were there. All the old favourites were available and I enjoyed a very good 4 seasons Pizza on a thin a crispy base. Everyone agreed that the food was freshly prepared and tasty but it just lacked that special oomph. Dishes were around the 6GBP mark up to about 12GBP for a steak - good value as portion sizes are generous.

As you might imagine they also provided alcoholic beverages with a carafe of the house wine being a reasonable 9GBP, it was very easy drinking and everyone found it very palatable.

At this point I must draw your attention to the facillites, yes the ones you need to visit after alla the wine. These must be negotiated carefully especially if you have the said stilletoes. The steps down are very steep and are stone so tend to get slippy, take someone to hold onto on the way down.

All in all I would recommend Di maggios to anyone lookig for a fun, good value night out where the food is not the main event and you are looking for a good atmosphere, friendly service and not too big a dent in the wallet.
