Close to the famous Leidse Plein (the middle of the touristic night life) you find near to one of these douzends of riverarms the Dikkers en Thijs-Hotel. It's about 90 Pounds a night but don't expect a first class accomodation. Due to the poor capacity of hotels they can ask for prices which are out of this world.
Your room will be not too big (to be friendly) and furniture does not give the impression of a modern styled hotel. The best message beforehand: There is enough space for sleeping but that's it (more or less). The toilets are separeted but your teeth has to be cleaned at the floor. Furthermore there is a little table in your room with two chairs an a small TV.
Breakfast is available but nothing special.
The real big advantage of this accomodation is their fantastic location.
Almost every Tram goes through Leidse Plein and brings you in a short time to every place you want to go in AMS, and also to the main station.
According to less other opportunities in AMS this is at least an emergency solution.

Welcome to UK Ciao. A good start. My only experience of Amsterdam Hotels is the Scandik Crown on Dammrak opposite Centraal Station. Is your comment under "disadvantages" a reflection on the red light district?
